Kbb.com: The Slow Extinction of the SUV | Dealer Communications

According to Alec Gutierrez, senior market analyst of automotive insights, Kelley Blue Book, the exodus away from SUVs has been underway for the past five years and will likely continue for the foreseeable future.? Since 2007, mid-size SUV sales have dropped by 70 percent, while compact crossover sales have skyrocketed by 50 percent.? Through the same time period, the number of mid-size sport utility vehicles offered up by manufacturers for sale has declined from 19 nameplates in 2007 to a paltry seven today.? All that remains today are the Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Liberty, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Nissan Pathfinder, Nissan Xterra and Dodge Nitro.

It?s no secret that America?s love affair with the mid-size SUV has steadily faded during the past several years.? As gas prices approached $4.00 per gallon not once, but three times since 2008, consumers have reassessed their priorities and determined that in most cases, a truck-based gas-guzzling SUV isn?t necessary.? Unless you have a need for the off-road or towing capability of a true truck-based SUV, there are far more suitable alternatives available today that offer comparable utility with the added bonus of improved performance, handling and fuel economy.

Not only has consumer preference for SUVs waned, the priorities of manufacturers have shifted to producing vehicles with better fuel economy to meet increasing CAFE standards.? For 2012, CAFE standards call for light trucks such as SUVs and Crossovers maintain just over 24 mpg.? This is expected to increase to 28.8 mpg by 2016 before maxing out at 40.3 mpg by 2025.

Fuel efficiency has become one of the top factors consumers consider when shopping for a new vehicle.? According to the Q2 Consumer Sentiment Survey conducted by Kelley Blue Book?s Market Intelligence group, 19 percent of all respondents indicated that they were shopping for a new vehicle to obtain better fuel economy than the vehicle they were replacing.? Fuel efficiency ranked second out of the 12 reasons consumers indicated they were in the market for a new vehicle.

Due to their larger footprint and weight, traditional SUVs are less favorable among automakers focused on producing more fuel-efficient crossovers.? In fact, the latest generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango and Ford Explorer all converted from body on frame SUVs to unibody crossovers to help lower weight and increase fuel efficiency.? As CAFE standards continue to rise and consumers seek more fuel-efficient alternatives, SUVs will continue to lose market share.

As the popularity of SUVs has declined, crossovers have emerged to fill the gap.? Crossovers offer AWD, towing capability near that of a comparable SUV, an elevated seating position and many of the same characteristics that helped endear the SUV in the hearts and minds of consumers through the 1990s and early 2000s.? Crossovers deliver on nearly everything SUVs bring to the table, while also offering performance, handling and fuel economy comparable to a mid-size or compact sedan.

Not only are the crossovers available today far more fuel efficient than traditional SUVs, in some cases, they actually approach the fuel economy of small cars.? The all-new 2013 Mazda CX-5 with SKYACTIV technology offers up an incredible 35 mpg on the highway; equal to the redesigned Toyota Camry and a scant 5 mpg shy of the 40 mpg benchmark of the most fuel-efficient subcompact and compact cars.? It is able to achieve this without sacrificing ride height, performance or utility, making it a practical alternative for someone looking to transition from an SUV to crossover.

Among those left standing, Nissan has already announced that the next generation Pathfinder will become a crossover sharing its architecture with the well-received Infiniti JX.? The Liberty also is expected to become a crossover for its next redesign, while the Dodge Nitro ceased production altogether late last year.? By 2014, the only mid-size SUVs left standing will be the Jeep Wrangler (a favorite among enthusiasts), the Toyota 4Runner, Nissan Xterra and the Toyota FJ Cruiser.

Although mid-size SUV sales have all but disappeared, there is still a large segment of the population that prefers utility vehicles over cars.? As the mid-size SUV continues on its long death march, the crossover will solidify its position as the vehicle of choice for consumers seeking utility.

Anti-Catholic bias in Washington state

Washington state regulators have warned a Roman Catholic bishop that his diocese risks running afoul of state campaign finance laws if he follows through with a planned fund-raising effort opposing same-sex marriage on the November ballot.

State law prohibits organizations, including churches, from raising money from individuals to give to political campaigns, said Lori Anderson, a spokeswoman for the state's Public Disclosure Commission.

"It's not because it's a church. It's because it's not a stand-alone individual," Anderson said on Thursday.

The commission was calling into question a recent letter from Bishop Joseph Tyson to Yakima-area pastors urging them to distribute donation envelopes to parishioners during the weekend of September 8-9.

The money would go to Preserve Marriage Washington, the campaign to defeat legalization of same-sex marriage on the state's November ballot.

Tyson's letter instructs parish priests not to open the envelopes once they are turned back in, but to place them into a pre-addressed security envelope to be mailed directly to Preserve Marriage, according to local media reports.

"It's not our envelope," Tyson told local television station KIMA-TV. "We're not collecting the money, and we're not taking the money. Preserve Marriage Washington is doing that. We're going to follow the state law."

Okay, so . . . if all of the envelopes are collected and sent personally to Bishop Tyson, and he?then sent the money to Preserve Marriage Washington, acting as a "stand-alone individual" - is that okay?

And I would like to know if the "organizations" affected by the state includes labor unions, and how strictly are they pressed to uphold the law?

Crash involving driver, 100, rekindles age debate

A young victim is treated by Los Angeles city firefighters after a car driven by a 100-year-old went onto a sidewalk and plowed into a group of parents and children outside a South Los Angeles elementary school, Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, in Los Angeles. Nine children and two adults were injured in the wreck. (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)

(AP) ? Jack Wyard is 92 and sees no reason to surrender his car keys, not to mention the freedom they give him to get up and go anywhere he wants, whenever he wants.

After all, he said, two years ago he got a perfect score on his written test to renew his license.

"I don't know what to suggest for anyone else, but I'm still comfortable on the highway and I enjoy driving," the retired sales manager from Los Angeles said Thursday.

A day earlier, a 100-year-old man who was attempting to back his Cadillac out of a grocery store parking lot struck and injured 11 people, nine of them children.

The accident in front of a South Los Angeles elementary school where children had lined up to buy after-school treats brought to the forefront again a debate over how old is too old to keep driving.

Is it 80? Or 90? And should anyone past 100 be allowed behind the wheel?

With the American Automobile Association reporting that 10,000 Americans are turning 65 every day, it's a debate that will only intensify in coming years.

"I don't think there should be a set age because people age differently," said Ruth Nadel, 98, who was in her mid-80s when she decided it was time to hand over the keys to someone else.

After her vehicle was in a head-on collision, her children convinced her that, while she wasn't to blame, her inability to get out of the way of an oncoming car indicated her reflexes might have slowed.

They told her it wasn't worth risking another wreck and hurting herself or someone else. She said she has no regrets, although she believes she could have driven for a few more years.

While there should be no age limit, the Washington, D.C., woman said, a driving test would be good.

She suggested 80 as a reasonable age for that, adding that a person could be retested every five years. "But that's as far as I'd go with it," she added.

Indeed, many states do. California is one of 28 states that have special requirements for older people renewing driver's licenses.

While younger California drivers with good driving records may automatically be granted two five-year license renewals, anyone over 70 must come to a DMV office and take a written test and eye exam.

"And if for any reason, the (DMV) employee might detect some kind of lack of ability or diminished ability to drive, they might ask them to take a physical driving test," DMV spokesman Armando Botello said.

There is no upper age limit for driving a car in California.

The state doesn't keep statistics on how many drivers are 100 or older. However, at the end of last year, 71,111 people 90 or older were licensed to drive in the state.

The notion that older drivers are more likely to get in crashes is not borne out by the statistics.

On average, drivers in their mid- to late-80s have lower crash rates per mile driven than those in their early 20s, said Jake Nelson, AAA's director of traffic safety advocacy and research.

And still, none of those groups drive as bad as teenagers ? the nation's riskiest drivers, he said.

Baby boomers, who will make up the fastest growing segment of the population, are expected to help double the number of older drivers on the road, to 57 million, by 2030.

And, unlike the current generation of older drivers, they are expected to drive more.

AAA officials suggest people talk with aging parents about what to do when they can no longer drive, plan ahead for how they will get around and what lifestyle changes they may have to make.

For Wyard, who lives on the far end of LA's San Fernando Valley, where commuter rail and bus service is limited, life without a car would be difficult. He couldn't easily get to his country club, his son's house or the store, to name a few.

His 61-year-old son, Steve, said that when he first heard the news of an accident caused by an elderly driver, his initial thought was: "Where's my dad?"

"I'm not sure I wouldn't rather ride with him than my 20-year-old son," he said.

Earphones potentially as dangerous as noise from jet engines, researchers find

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Turning the volume up too high on your headphones can damage the coating of nerve cells, leading to temporary deafness, scientists from the University of Leicester have shown for the first time.

Earphones or headphones on personal music players can reach noise levels similar to those of jet engines, the researchers said.

Noises louder than 110 decibels are known to cause hearing problems such as temporary deafness and tinnitus (ringing in the ears), but the University of Leicester study is the first time the underlying cell damage has been observed.

The study has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

University of Leicester researcher Dr Martine Hamann of the Department of Cell Physiology and Pharmacology, who led the study, said:

"The research allows us to understand the pathway from exposure to loud noises to hearing loss. Dissecting the cellular mechanisms underlying this condition is likely to bring a very significant healthcare benefit to a wide population. The work will help prevention as well as progression into finding appropriate cures for hearing loss."

Nerve cells that carry electrical signals from the ears to the brain have a coating called the myelin sheath, which helps the electrical signals travel along the cell. Exposure to loud noises -- i.e. noise over 110 decibels -- can strip the cells of this coating, disrupting the electrical signals. This means the nerves can no longer efficiently transmit information from the ears to the brain.

However, the coating surrounding the nerve cells can reform, letting the cells function again as normal. This means hearing loss can be temporary, and full hearing can return, the researchers said.

Dr Hamann explained: "We now understand why hearing loss can be reversible in certain cases. We showed that the sheath around the auditory nerve is lost in about half of the cells we looked at, a bit like stripping the electrical cable linking an amplifier to the loudspeaker. The effect is reversible and after three months, hearing has recovered and so has the sheath around the auditory nerve."

The findings are part of ongoing research into the effects of loud noises on a part of the brain called the dorsal cochlear nucleus, the relay that carries signals from nerve cells in the ear to the parts of the brain that decode and make sense of sounds. The team has already shown that damage to cells in this area can cause tinnitus -- the sensation of 'phantom sounds' such as buzzing or ringing.

The research was funded by the Wellcome Trust, Medisearch, GlaxoSmithkline and the Royal Society.

Look@Her: Special Needs Mom, Christina A.!

Special Needs Mom, Christina A.!

Most Wednesdays, a special needs mom or a military spouse small business owner will be profiled on Look@Her. These are very special, inspiring and hard-working women. I am honored to be able to recognize them for being wonderful mothers, wives and role models.

?

Without further hesitation, let me introduce?

  • Name: ?Christina A.
  • Spouse: ?Married for 13 years to Carlton
  • Children:?2
  • Current Base/Location:?
  • Christina is??a Special Education Teachers Assistant at the elementary school that her girls attend. ?Prior to that, she worked as a substitute teacher at the same school.
  • Christina has a??Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Science Education from NC State University
  • Christina has a wonderful blog??Riding the Crazy Train: ?Diary of a Delirious Mom?and I highly recommend a visit (you will keep going back, I promise!)

?You must advocate for your child! ?As parents, we are our children?s best hope for getting what they need to thrive, whether it be assistance at school, or therapy, or special equipment and accommodations. ?Whatever you do, if you feel your child could do more or do better with particular services or accommodations, DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK! ?Demand those things, if need be. ?If you feel you can?t adequately advocate for your child personally, hire someone who can! ?You will not regret it. ? Christina A

What are your child?s special needs??I have twin daughters, and both are on the autism spectrum. ?Things get ?interesting? around my house some days.

How do you advocate for your child??I use my blog as a way to raise autism awareness. ?I use stories of everyday life and humor to teach others about the different way in which people with autism perceive the world around them. ?I had a really hard time finding information about autism and Asperger?s syndrome that was written in a plain-spoken way. ?Everything out there, for the most part, is very clinical and scientific. ?I wanted to provide a warmer, more realistic from-the-trenches voice for parenting autistic children. ?I hope I achieve that at least part of the time. ?I also wouldn?t be offended if I made you laugh once in awhile, too!

Share your journey as a special needs mom:?From the time my daughters were just a few months old, I began being aware in differences between the two of them, as well as differences between my girls and other babies. ?Both my girls were missing all their milestones, like sitting up and crawling, by a pretty wide margin (several months usually). ?Princess was missing her milestones by much bigger margins than Birdie, however. ?She had very little muscle tone in her core. ?She was also showing signs of stimming, startling easily, avoiding eye contact, not reaching for us, and not responding to her name, all before the age of one. ?All these things, coupled with my limited experience working with special education students, made me suspect that Princess was on the autism spectrum. ?We obtained physical therapy for her through our health care provider, but our pediatrician very carefully skirted the word autism. ?He would only say that Princess had speech and gross motor developmental delays. ?Even when pressed on the issue, he would change the subject or tell me not to worry ?because she is still too young to tell. ?Besides, you pay for that diagnosis out of your pocket.? ?Upon being told that, I set off on a self-education journey to read everything I could get my hands on to learn about autism. ?After reading the definition of autism and how it presents itself, I was floored. ?I felt like the author had written his book based on my Princess. ?It was spot on. ?As hard as it was to accept that my baby had autism, it was so much easier than wondering what was different about her. ?I finally knew she wasn?t broken. ?Her differences had a name, which made them something I could handle. ?From that point on, I armed myself with knowledge, and learned through trial and error what worked to help my daughter understand and get along in the world.

As the girls got older, I started noticing more and more that Birdie, too, had some ?quirks? other kids her age did not have. ?She couldn?t tolerate other people entering her personal space, yet she had no concept of staying out of the personal space of others. ?Her vocabulary at two years-old was already more impressive than most 3rd graders. ?She would fixate on activities and certain objects with no sign of getting tired of them? so different from the short attention span of the average 2 year old. ?Still, we wrote off her weirdness as learning these behaviors (except for the vocabulary) from her sister. ?Since they were twins and the only kids in the house, it stood to reason that she would pick up some of her sister?s odd behavior. ?We couldn?t easily do play dates, due to how overwhelming tended to be to Princess, so Birdie had no other children to model her behavior after. ?It wasn?t until Kindergarten that it became perfectly clear to me that Birdie was also on the spectrum. ?The differences were glaring between Birdie and her neurotypical peers. ?I guess I was so busy attending to the fire that was Princess, that I didn?t see Birdie smoldering and about to burst into flames, too. ?Either that, or my point of reference was just skewed? I was, after all, a first time mother. ?How do you compare your kids to the ?norm? when there is no norm at your house?

Both of my girls received their official autism diagnosis through the school system. ?Princess received her services very early? we enrolled her in an early intervention pre-school program when she was three that awarded her services twice a week. ?She received physical therapy and one hour a week of one-on-one time with a developmental preschool specialist. ?Princess was then reevaluated in Kindergarten to receive services in 1st grade. ?Birdie did not go through the special education eligibility process until the end of 2nd grade. ?At first we felt that she may be able to handle the stresses of public education without an IEP. ?Her second grade year, although academically was a breeze, proved to be a little more than she could handle on her own socially. ?Her IEP services are scheduled to begin this school year.

What has been the greatest difficulty you have faced in parenting a child with special needs??The hardest part of parenting a child with special needs is dealing with the uneducated, uninformed, and unaware public. ?So many times people will make assumptions about my children (and me) without having all the facts about their disability. ?I would much rather be asked about my children?s challenges than have them judged based on a lack of information.?

What are some struggles for you as a special needs mom??I think the most difficult part of all of this has not been the fact that my daughters have autism. ?The hardest part has been living so far away from my parents, siblings, and in-laws. ?So many people have a natural support system in place, and can call on family when they need a hand. ?This has never really been the case for me and my crew. ?Although my husband is not military, his job has made us move several times over the last 13 years, which means I don?t live near childhood or longtime friends, either. ?I also can?t easily hire a sitter, because sitters don?t usually understand my children?s needs. ?This leaves me feeling a bit isolated and ?on my own? when things get hard, or when my husband is travelling for work. ?I can handle my girls? diagnoses? it?s the pressure of being the sole responsible adult most of the time that kills me!

What advice would you give other special needs parents??Don?t be afraid to ask for help? from family, from friends, from your child?s school, or anyone else. ?First of all. you can?t do everything yourself all the time. ?Parents of special needs kids are the worst about asking for help, because we don?t want be a burden or explain our children?s needs to others. ?We have to get over this! ?Second, you child is often entitled to certain types of help at school or through medical providers, but you have to seek those things out. ?We are our kids? best advocates.

?

Thanks?to?Christina A.??for sharing her story! Please visit her blog ? ?Riding the Crazy Train: ?Diary of a Delirious Mom

Leave some love and tell her I sent you her way!

MPAA supports GOP platform's opposition to piracy

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The Motion Picture Association of America is supporting the Republican party's platform to protect intellectual property from online piracy, MPAA CEO Chris Dodd said in a statement Wednesday.

"Copyright is the cornerstone of innovation: it allows creators to benefit from what they create," Dodd, a former Democratic senator from Connecticut, said.

The GOP the platform was set Tuesday at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. yesterday.

"Victimized private firms will be encouraged to raise claims in both U.S. courts and at the World Trade Organization," the platform reads. "Punitive measures will be imposed on foreign firms that misappropriate American technology and intellectual property."

The language of the platform "strikes a very smart balance" between "protecting content and internet freedom," Dodd said in his statement.

"As Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor - herself once a Republican elected officials '' wrote, 't should not be forgotten that the Framers intended copyright itself to be the engine of free expression. By establishing a marketable right to use the one's expression, copyright supplies the economic incentive to create and disseminate ideas.'"

The GOP platform also argued against federal action on net neutrality.

"The internet has unleashed innovation, enabled growth, and inspired freedom more rapidly and extensively than any other technological advance in human history," the platform reads. "Its independence is its power. The internet offers a communications system uniquely free from government intervention."

But rather than government control, or international or United Nations control, as has been suggested, the platform says "the only way to safeguard or improve these systems is through the private sector."

Dodd and the MPAA pushed to pass the Stop Online Privacy Act, better known as SOPA, which was derailed by a campaign led by Google, Wikipedia and other Silicon Valley heavyweights.

Perry Hall High School: Shooting and bullying? Not so fast

Perry Hall High School shooting: The conversation about bullying and its impact has already started ? and it's a dangerous conversation to have.

By Stephanie Hanes,?Correspondent / August 28, 2012

The Perry Hall High School shooting Aug. 27 has sparked dangerous conversation about bullying ? before we even know the details. Here, a Baltimore County police officer spoke to a parent as students were evacuated from the school in Perry Hall, Md.

Soon after 15-year-old?Robert Wayne Gladden Jr. allegedly opened fire in his school?s crowded cafeteria, critically injuring at least one other student, a reporter showed up at his family?s home and asked why this might have happened. The boy was bullied, answered his father, according to the Associated Press.

Another family member then said that they were all horrified, and were praying for the victims.

The conversation about bullying and its impact has already started. Even though there?s not much additional information about the case at this point.

While there have been rumors about social media sites and networking profiles that reveal a boy with goth fashion and angry messages, police have cautioned reporters that these reports may not be substantiated.

So this bullying conversation, one could argue, is dangerous.

We?ve written before about how the concept of ?bullying? has become so broad, so trendy, so amorphous, that it has all but lost any specific meaning. Over the past months, for instance, we?ve read news of a six-year-old ?bully? getting suspended from school for singing popular song lyrics in the lunch line and a 68-year-old bus monitor getting ?bullied? by a group of students.

(Neither of which seem to fit the US Department of Health and Human Service?s definition of bullying, which says the act involves aggressive behavior among school-aged children and involves a real or perceived power imbalance.)???

But in addition to de-toothing the idea of bullying ? and possibly undermining the response to a very real problem ? some child development experts say the knee-jerk connecting of ?bullying? to all sorts of violent behavior, from suicide to school shootings, threatens to normalize these actions.

In other words, if it starts becoming common understanding that the ?normal? response to being bullied is to commit suicide, or to get a gun and start shooting classmates, then you start setting a clear social pathway to those behaviors.

In reality, meanwhile, the connection between bullying and these outcomes is far more tenuous.

Author Dave Cullen, who was one of the journalists who first reported on the 1999 Columbine High School shootings, spent the next decade researching his book "Columbine" about what had happened there, and why; and untangling the myths of trench coats and outsiders he says he and his media colleagues created.

RELATED: 5 top childcare options from nanny to day care

?We all knew what happened there, right?? he wrote about Columbine in a New York Times opinion piece soon after this summer?s mass shooting in? Aurora, Colo. ?Two outcast loners exacted revenge against the jocks for relentlessly bullying them.

?Not one bit of that turned out to be true.?

Perry Hall High School is, in many ways, a typical suburban high school. It is big and low-slung and brick; it sits in an area outside of Baltimore that is considered generally safe and middle class. Also typical ? depressingly ? is the narrative starting to emerge from Monday?s fear and violence there. But perhaps this time we will learn to stop and wait, and recognize that the forces behind horrific events like the one in Perry Hall are far more complicated, and individual, than any buzz word.

Hughes, Swisher push Yankees past Blue Jays

NEW YORK (AP) - When Mariano talks, Rafael Soriano listens.

The career saves leader was watching when his fill-in gave up a three-run homer in the ninth inning of the Yankees' extra-inning loss Monday night and had some thoughts. So the injured star sought out Soriano when he visited the clubhouse Tuesday afternoon and gave him some advice.

"`Why you got to throw too many sliders, when you got a good fastball?"' Soriano said Rivera asked him. "I said, `Forget about last night and let me do something different."'

Soriano stuck to the new plan Tuesday and struck out two in the ninth, closing out a fine home start for Phil Hughes that sent New York to a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Hughes (13-11) won his sixth consecutive decision at Yankee Stadium, allowing only Adeiny Hechavarria's first major league homer in seven effective innings. Then he turned it over to David Robertson and Soriano to finish off the four-hitter.

Soriano was not available to reporters after he gave up the go-ahead homer Monday night to Colby Rasmus - on a slider. A day later, the reliever blamed the Yankees' public relations staff for not telling him the media wanted to talk to him. But he was ready at his locker after notching his 34th save in 37 chances, one of his best outings this season.

"The best day I had all year," Soriano said.

New York catcher Russell Martin said Soriano appeared to be pitching with "a little anger. He took it out the right way."

Nick Swisher had an RBI single in the third and Curtis Granderson hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to help the Yankees to their fifth win in 12 games. They handed Ricky Romero (8-12) his 11th straight loss and beat him for the third time during his winless skid.

The left-hander has not won in 12 starts since June 22. The Blue Jays have provided little help, though, giving him just 17 runs of support in his last 10 starts.

"He was very sharp tonight," Toronto manager John Farrell said. "He was efficient and I think he benefited from a couple of extra days' rest."

Romero did rebound from a wild outing against Detroit in which he walked eight in 5 1-3 innings. This time, he walked two and yielded five hits and two runs in seven innings.

"I've been working hard all week, the guys, everyone has kind of been helping me out through this," Romero said. "I'm just going to build off of this."

With sluggers Mark Teixeira out after straining his left calf Monday and Alex Rodriguez sidelined since late July because of a broken hand, manager Joe Girardi put Yankees newcomer Steve Pearce in the No. 4 spot in the lineup because he has decent numbers against lefties. Pearce was acquired Monday from the Houston Astros for cash.

The designated hitter scored on Granderson's sacrifice fly after he had walked, advanced on a wild pitch and went to third on a groundout by Martin, batting fifth despite a .196 average coming in.

Pearce and Martin went a combined 0 for 5 with two strikeouts. But Swisher had his 21st RBI in 20 games since moving into the second spot in New York's lineup.

"We're a little banged up," Girardi said. "No one's going to feel sorry for us."

The Blue Jays dropped to 12-26 since Jose Bautista first went on the disabled list July 17 because of a left wrist injury. The three-time All-Star was activated Friday but went back on the DL two games later with the same problem. He will have season-ending surgery next week to stabilize a tendon and is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

Hechavarria cut it to 2-1 in the fifth with a high fly that landed several rows back in short right field. Yankees fans often throw home run balls back on the field but not this time. During warmups for the bottom half, Blue Jays right fielder Moises Sierra was talking to fans in the area where the ball cleared the fence.

Toronto had a chance in the sixth, when Hughes walked the first two batters. But he got Adam Lind to hit a soaring fly that landed in Swisher's glove right in front of the 314-foot sign in the right-field corner. Robinson Cano then made a leaping grab of Yunel Escobar's liner to second and threw to third to double up Rasmus.

"It's an incredible play," Girardi said. "I thought he had no chance at third."

NOTES: Hughes has lost his last five road starts and is 3-8 with a 5.03 ERA away from home. He is 10-3 with a 3.25 ERA at Yankee Stadium. ... Rodriguez took batting practice on the field for the first time since his injury. He also ran the bases and fielded grounders. "So far, so good," A-Rod said. Girardi said the slugger will do the same Wednesday and then the team will discuss a plan, which could include one or two rehab games. ... LHP Andy Pettitte (broken left ankle) threw on flat ground. Girardi hopes he'll have a bullpen session this weekend. ... Farrell said neither Henderson Alvarez nor Aaron Laffey would miss any time after being by batted balls Monday. Alvarez took a hard grounder off his left shin and Laffey was hit by a drive off his left calf. Both are day to day.

Can Romney Woo Latinos in Nevada?

LAS VEGAS? President Obama has no business asking Oscar Cuevas for his vote.

Since Obama assumed office, Cuevas, 23, lost his job as a cell-phone store manager when the shop went out of business. He spent the next two years unemployed. His parents lost their home and moved in with him. So did four of his siblings, one with a newborn child. Cuevas hasn?t paid his own mortgage in months, and the bank has come knocking. He now has a job helping to register Latino voters, but he still can?t make his house payment. Too many other bills have piled up.

Cuevas voted for Barack Obama in 2008, but he is undecided this time. ?He?s not doing a bang-up job,? Cuevas said, flashing an infectious smile.

For 100 years,??has been the quintessential presidential bellwether, siding with the victor in 24 of the past 25 campaigns (it missed only Jimmy Carter), more than any other state. And this year, both sides are pouring millions of dollars into ground operations and television advertising to frame the debate.

If the 2012 election is about the economy, then Cuevas?and?Nevada?should be a lost cause for Obama. The state has topped the charts in unemployment (at 12 percent), foreclosures, and faded dreams. In some Las Vegas neighborhoods, more than eight in 10 homes are underwater, worth less than they were bought for. In the ?best-off? ZIP code in the Las Vegas region, 42 percent of homes are underwater, according to Zillow, the real-estate tracking firm. The only construction work here these days seems to be boarding up abandoned houses.

And yet the president is not just competitive in?Nevada, he is leading Republican Mitt Romney, according to most polls. It is not the 12-point margin he won by in 2008, but a slim lead is still a lead.

Vice President Joe Biden?s July speech here to the National Council of La Raza crystallized the Obama campaign?s strategy aimed at Latinos. Speaking in the foreclosure capital of America, it was 10 minutes before Biden mentioned the economy. Instead, he warned the crowd of nearly 2,000 Latino activists of the dangers posed by a President Romney.

?Close your eyes,? said Biden, channeling his inner revivalist.

In the span of a minute, he asked them 10 times to ?imagine? the horrors of a Romney presidency. Biden spoke of ?self-deportation,???s immigration law, and a veto of the Dream Act. Civil rights, voting rights, college scholarships, health care coverage for Hispanics?all are on the line. ?Close your eyes and imagine,? he repeated.

The Obama campaign?s tactics here in economically ravaged?Nevada?were laid bare: Shoot the messenger (Romney) and change the subject (from the economy).

Just as Obama wants Latinos to close their eyes to picture a dark Romney future, Romney wants them to open their eyes to the hardships of their Obama economic present.

?Given the dynamics of what?s going on [in the economy], it?s tough to imagine the president could be as close in this thing as he is,? said Sig Rogich, a GOP operative in the state who designed television ads for President George H.W. Bush?s campaigns.

Latinos are a big reason why. Although?Nevada?voted for George W. Bush twice, the state?s Hispanic population surged 81 percent between 2000 and 2010. Hispanics are now a quarter of the population and a muscular share of the electorate. They will grow stronger: The 2010 census showed that 39 percent of?Nevadaresidents under 18 are Hispanic.

A FAILURE TO CONNECT

?You just don?t make old white voters like you used to here,? said David Damore, an associate professor of political science at the University of?Nevada?(Las Vegas). Despite a depressed economy that has disproportionately hurt Latinos, particularly those in the construction trades, they haven?t fled Obama?s coalition. Yet.

They are voters like Adriana Reyes, a 24-year-old who has a janitorial job at a mall and is still living with her parents. ?Can?t move out because the family is struggling,? she said, as she walked through a shopping center where two discount markets compete with empty storefronts. ?It?s bad.? She doesn?t blame the president entirely, but she says, ?He doesn?t seem like he?s done a lot.?

A registered independent, Reyes voted for Obama four years ago. Now she?s not sure. ?I go for where it?s going to help out the economy,? she said. She still isn?t sold on the idea that Romney is that candidate, though.

Reyes is not alone. In interviews with?Nevada?voters, political strategists, and politicians, it?s clear that the state?s financial collapse has moved many voters out of the president?s camp and into the undecided column. But many have yet to migrate all the way to embracing Romney. The polls agree.

A major reason is Romney?s image problem with Latinos. In a July NBC News/Telemundo/Wall Street Journal?poll, only 22 percent of Latinos nationally viewed Romney positively; 44 percent held a negative view. (In contrast, 64 percent of Hispanics viewed Obama favorably.)

The Latino vote is critical well beyond?Nevada. The Hispanic population tops 20 percent in the key swing states of??and?, and is a burgeoning force in some Southern states such as??and. Even?, long the subject of complaints about its lack of diversity and its central role in the presidential nominating gantlet, saw its Latino population boom 84 percent in the past decade (still only 5 percent of the population).

Romney?s personal unpopularity among Latinos is partly attributable to the hard-line immigration stance he took during the GOP primary season. It was one of the few issues on which Romney could lap the field from the right, and he seized the opportunity, especially during the fleeting moments that??Gov.?appeared to be a formidable foe; that?s when Romney memorably embraced a doctrine of ?self-deportation.?

The issue has had a spillover effect. In the NBC poll, Latinos said that Obama would handle every major policy area better than Romney, including the economy, by at least a 2-1 advantage.

Romney is working to close the gap in the state. His campaign has hired a?Nevada?Hispanic outreach director, which it says is a GOP first. Romney?s son Craig has cut Spanish-language ads that feature a fact that the candidate himself rarely mentions on the trail: Mitt Romney?s father was born in Mexico. The campaign has dispatched its highest profile Latino surrogates to the state, including Sen.??of?Florida?and former Bush Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez.

HIDG THE BALL

Given Romney?s stance on the Dream Act and his tough rhetoric on immigration, his campaign has focused its communications to Latinos (and almost every other demographic) on a one-size-fits-all message on the economy.

?Jobs and the economy?it trumps everything,? said Ryan Erwin, a GOP strategist and top Romney adviser in the state. ?You can?t walk through a grocery store or a??without hearing people talking about the economy. It is a pretty narrow focus if anyone thinks Hispanic voters aren?t caring about the economy as much as anyone else.?

The Obama campaign is doing everything it can to undercut Romney?s credibility as the potential fiscal fixer-in-chief. A barrage of TV ads, in English and Spanish, has questioned Romney?s character, portraying him as an out-of-touch millionaire with offshore bank accounts who can?t relate to their financial woes. Romney?s plans for a car elevator at his La Jolla, Calif., beach house, his wife?s ?couple of Cadillacs,? and his friendship with NASCAR team owners have helped the Obama cause. ?That has a real resonance in a state that?s been hit as hard as we have,? said Zac Petkanas, a senior strategist for the?Nevada?state Democratic Party.

The party has recent practice in demonizing the opposition to distract from a tepid economy. In 2010, unpopular Senate Majority Leader??stood for reelection amid an even worse economic climate. The Democrat won by casting his GOP opponent, tea partier?, as an extremist who couldn?t be trusted. Romney, calm and cool in his second presidential bid, is a far more difficult mark. But the strategy is much the same.

In the La Raza speech, Biden skewered Romney for his Swiss bank accounts, Cayman Island cash stashes, and hidden tax returns. Then, in a single line, he linked?Arizona?s controversial immigration law and Romney?s shrouded personal finances.

?He wants you to show your papers, but he won?t show us his,? Biden said. The crowd thundered its approval.

Republicans say that Team Obama is simply trying to divert attention from the economy, especially among Latinos. ?They cannot run on their record,? said Hector Barreto, a former Bush administration official and now the cochairman of?Juntos con Romney,?the campaign?s Hispanic-outreach effort. ?They know it, and we know it.?

(The Romney operation had hoped that Carlos Gutierrez, the former Bush Commerce secretary, could make a rebuttal speech at the four-day conference, but La Raza turned him down, saying that the request came too late. Instead of a spot at the podium, Gutierrez and Barreto were relegated to the hallways.)

Republicans complain that the president?s June policy decree, which could allow hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children to stay and work? without fear of deportation, is crass political pandering.

?Pigeonholing Latino voters into focusing entirely on immigration is an insult,? said Pete Ernaut, an influential GOP strategist in the state.

But it appears to be working. The July NBC poll gave Obama a 44-point lead among Latino registered voters nationally, 67 percent to 23 percent.

STUMBLIN??IN

With less than three months until the election, neither Romney nor Obama has skated a flawless performance in?Nevada.

Since he has been president, Obama has made offhand remarks that disparage spending in Las Vegas. ?You don?t blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you?re trying to save for college,? he said in 2010. It was a cutting remark for a city and state that relies so heavily on tourism, and at a time when the industry had cratered. Locals took offense, elected officials howled, and business visibly declined.

?Did it hurt us? It did,? said Jan Jones, a former two-term Las Vegas mayor in an interview in her office at Caesar?s Palace casino, where she?s now an executive. Jones is a Democrat and supports Obama.

Romney?s misstep came last fall. ?Don?t try to stop the foreclosure process,? he said during a Las Vegas swing. ?Let it run its course and hit the bottom.?

In a state where the housing bust could take more than a decade to recover, that remark ?went over like a lead balloon,? said Eric Herzik, professor of political science at the University of?Nevada?(Reno).

But more than a poor turn of phrase, Herzik said, Romney?s comment raised questions about what he would do as president to help?Nevada. The GOP free-market philosophy of lower taxes and fewer regulations is largely a reality in this Western outpost. ?We?re a state built on gambling; the bars never close; we have legalized prostitution in 10 counties,? Herzik said.

That laissez-faire approach had fueled decades of spectacular growth. And, in recent years, a staggering collapse. ?If low taxes and regulations were the panacea, then?Nevada?should have led the nation out of recession,? Herzik said. Instead, it has been among the laggards.

Erwin, the Romney adviser, said that?Nevadans blame a growing federal bureaucracy under Obama for strangling the recovery. ?Governor Romney?s message of economic freedom is going to resonate well here,? he said.

Still, nagging questions remain, even among?Nevada?Republicans, about what exactly Romney is promising. His campaign ?is now, ?He did bad, and I can do better,? ? Ernaut said. ?At some point, voters are going to say, ?How?? ?

LIMITING THE DAMAGE

The extent to which the Latino electorate will be motivated to come out for Obama remains one of 2012?s great intangibles. To win here, Romney does not need to carry the Latino vote. But he must limit Obama?s margin of victory. The state?s GOP governor,?, who is Latino, won election in 2010 despite garnering only a third of the Hispanic vote, according to exit polling.

The president faces some headwinds among Latinos nationally. Despite the June decree, Obama?s overall deportation record has been a sore subject. His administration has set records, ejecting nearly 400,000 illegal immigrants in the last full fiscal year.

Obama also promised in his 2008 campaign to tackle a comprehensive immigration overhaul but then did little to advance such a plan, even as Democrats controlled all the levers of government in 2009 and 2010. Romney?s campaign regularly reminds Hispanics of this. ?Now you?re getting around to it,? Barreto said of the deportation freeze. ?Why? Because you?re running for reelection. Why? Because the enthusiasm is down in the Hispanic community.?

Another wrinkle in November?s Hispanic turnout is a local labor fight that could have national implications. The most potent union in the state, Culinary Workers Union Local 226, nearly half of whose 55,000 members are Latino, is threatening to sit out the election if contract and organizing disputes remain unresolved. If this key cog in the Democrats? Latino-turnout machine stays on the sidelines, it could cost the Democrats dearly. Still, most analysts expect the union to ultimately mobilize.

If Latinos are Obama?s great demographic trump card in this desert state, Romney has a smaller one of his own: the Mormon vote. The community accounts for an estimated 7 percent of the population but votes at a far higher clip. Church members are expected to turn out in droves for Romney, the first presidential nominee from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and for the state?s GOP senator,?, who is also Mormon and is locked in a tough race.

Of course, the biggest wild card remains how the?Nevada?economy fares between now and November. Las Vegas, more than anywhere, depends on a confidence economy?visitors feeling flush and spending like it?and confidence has been on the decline.

The economy is a constant worry for Cuevas, whose family is living in his house that?s on the brink of foreclosure. Sure, he said, he?s still ?looking? at both Obama and Romney, but that?s not really the right word. He can only afford to glance at politics these days. He thinks about the election a lot, though, as he helps register voters. Election Day is when Cuevas becomes unemployed again.

?This job,? he said, ?ends Nov. 6.??

Networking with Social Media? ? Networking HQ BLOG with Larry ...

Social media is a way to transmit, or share information with a broad audience. Everyone has the opportunity to create and distribute. All you really need is an internet connection and you?re off to the races. On the other hand, social networking is an act of engagement. Groups of people with common interests, or like-minds, associate together on social networking sites and build relationships through community. (Source: SocialMediaToday.com)

What is Social Networking? Social networking is the grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small rural communities or a neighborhood subdivision. There are a number of social networking websites that focus on particular interests. (See BONUS Article list below) Two-thirds of online adults (66%) use social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or LinkedIn.

?Social media isn?t effective if you use it to simply ?collect? people so you have large numbers. Collecting connections and followers is a numbers game and it is very easy to do so. However just collecting people doesn?t mean your creating valuable relations that are relative and relevant to your business.? ~ Jay Deragon

There are dozens of really great reasons why to use social media but we?ll keep it to the top ten. They are:

1. You will find whomever you want to do business with somewhere online.
2. You will find whatever knowledge you need about any market or any person online.
3. You can reach your market by simply engaging in the right conversations with the right people. This is more effective than advertising.
4. If your business can?t be found, isn?t engaging with the market or worse yet ignoring the market you are not likely to be creating transactional opportunities while your competition does.
5. Communications is a system to leverage your organizations ability to communicate with your market. Social media is the new communications system.
6. Social media saves time and money if you use it right for the right things.
7. If you learn ?how? to use social media correctly then you?ll understand ?what? your market is looking for and ?where? they are looking. You?d want them to look for you.
socialMedia8. ?When? your customers and prospects are engaging about you, your industry or your products and services you need to be there listening. Otherwise how will you gain the necessary market intelligence, be enabled to respond or even be aware of problems or needs. If you are not present when and where the conversations are occurring you are basically out of touch with your market.
9. Communications is about reach. Communicating is about relational dynamics between people. Social media provides the means to effectively communicate with your market. However communicating in human rather than institutional terms.
10. If you are not communicating (listening first, initiating second) then how in the world do you expect to create relationship with people and businesses that may want the value you offer? (Source: http://www.relationship-economy.com)

A profile photo or company logo is worth a thousand tweets! Use a real photo of you or company logo on your social media profiles. (not your kids, not your car, and not some bizarro unidentifiable thumbnail image). Don?t use a cartoon character or your pet?s photo. Help your connections put a face with a name. They?ll be more likely to remember you when they need to find someone with your expertise or product. I will never communicate (?like?) with a Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest or LinkedIn site without a photo.

Use your real name to brand professional profiles on social media sites. Take personal brand management seriously. Facebook, one of the best-known social media sites on the Internet today, has become a valuable way of networking outside your circle.

47TwitterFollowersKeep things professional. Make sure you don?t communicate anything you wouldn?t want your clients, prospects or potential employers to read.

Twitter and Facebook are no longer just for college kids who want to post their party pics. Businesses increasingly use these sites to promote brands, products and services, and as a means to building more authentic business relationships. They have learned how to be brilliant, pithy and relevant in 140 Characters. While setting up a profile on Twitter sites may cost zero dollars, its management requires constant care and feeding. And I will add, social media sites can become quite addictive. Be sure to manage your time with social media sites or they will end up managing you! ;-)

Get creative in selecting networking options. Many people overlook industry/professional associations and their monthly meetings. Those meeting are often open to non-members in related industries and may attract people who normally do not attend chamber events. Online social media networking can be powerful however, you cannot beat the old fashion face-to-face way!

What about Pinterest? This social network is a place to organize and share online images that you find interesting or inspiring and continues to reinforce the trending growth of an increasingly visual social web. Its users are extremely engaged. LinkedIn is another site that is mostly used by businesses. Remember to check out Google+ and YouTube.

?A business that doesn?t take the little time required to Blog or use social networking is ignoring one of the lowest-cost, highest returns on investments they can make,? says Paul Allen, CEO of MyFamily.com, and a social networking enthusiast. ?In just minutes you can set up a Facebook group or event and get dozens of interested people there. It?s a low-cost way to find potential contractors, employees or business partners,? he says.

My friend, Susan RoAne, The Mingling Maven?, says, ?The chitchat about chat rooms has exploded since I first wrote about it in 1995. We now have several generations of people whose virtual socializing, conversing and networking has exceeded their real time of each activity. With that, we have lost a lot of our personal touch. The on-line world not only gives us a new type of room to work, we also get thousands of possible ?rooms? in which to chat about anything, anywhere, anytime. It?s a room without the boundaries of walls or time, yet there are rules and boundaries of better behavior to be observed.?

I can say this: Networking with social media is not a fad. It will evolve and likely turn into something barely recognizable from the social media we know and use today. It will be here in some form or another forever. Social media can be confusing and sometimes overwhelming. However, be quick to learn new tools, new technologies ? and how to appropriately apply them to your business.

Sanjay Bhardwaj all praise for Unmukt Chand ? Cricket News - Bettor

Sanjay Bhardwaj all praise for Unmukt Chand ? Cricket News Update

India?s Under-19 Cricket coach, Sanjay Bhardwaj, on Monday lavished praise on the World Cup winning skipper Unmukt Chand, saying the rookie top order batsman is more talented than the Delhi dasher, Gautam Gambhir.

?Unmukt is certainly more talented than what Gautam was at his age,? Bhardwaj told PTI?on Monday. ?While Unmukt is a mixture of talent and hardwork, Gautam was all sweat,? the Indian coach explained.

Chand, the 19-year-old emerging batsman from Delhi, led his side from the front during the six-wicket win over Australia in the U-19 Cricket World Cup final against Australia, on Sunday, to win the coveted trophy for his country. The Indian skipper played a scintillating knock of 111 not out, studded with seven muscular boundaries and six lofty sixes.

?If you see Unmukt's career graph, his biggest plus is grabbing every major opportunity with both hands. Gautam had to struggle and fight a lot more than Unmukt," said Bhardwaj comparing the two Delhi lads.

Sanjay said that he was lucky that he got a chance to mentor the talented players like Unmukt Chand and Gautam Gambhir, adding that it was the talent of the duo that earned him a name as a coach.

Unmukt Chand made his first-class debut in November 2010, and has so far played 11 matches for Delhi and averages 43.41 with the bat. He also has a century and four half centuries in his name. The right-handed opening batsman made his List A debut in February 2010 and has to date played 12 one-day matches, in which he has scored a half century as well. He also played for Delhi Daredevils in this year?s Indian Premier League.

Replying to a query regarding Unmukt?s chances of earning a national call-up, Sanjay said, "By early 2013, Unmukt should be in the senior team. Obviously, he would have to perform well but he has the talent and willpower to do well."

In another interview, to DNA India the Indian coach said that the victory over Pakistan in the quarter-final gave his side the confidence to win the title, after defeating New Zealand in the semis and Australia in the final.

Inhabitat's Week in Green: a locomotive that runs on hydrogen, honey detective and a 30 mph-capable hover bike

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green tktktk

Inhabitat is always on the lookout for new and interesting innovations, but some of the things that flashed across our screens this week truly defy the rules of physics. Take, for example, the story of 51-year-old Chinese man Sun Jifa, who lost both of his arms in an explosion and built his own bionic hands out of scrap metal. Building functional prosthetic limbs is one thing, but doing it without the aid of fingers? That's downright mind-blowing. We were also pretty excited to hear that a California-based tech company has developed a working hover bike that travels up to 30 mph. It isn't quite ready for a high-speed chase in the forest a la Star Wars, but it still looks pretty cool. And in another amazing development, a team of Harvard researchers has figured out a way to store 70 billion books in a space the size of your thumbnail.
