The National Retail Federation is sponsoring a national video contest, titled ?This is Retail,? asking anyone who works in the retail sector to submit a video telling their story to help demonstrate the opportunities and power of the retail industry.
The ?This is Retail? National Video Contest is accepting submissions through March 16. All qualifying videos entered during this period will be reviewed by a judging panel of retail executives, who will pick the top 20 videos to be announced on April 2.

Stanford guilty of bilking investors of billions
HOUSTON (Reuters) - Allen Stanford was convicted on Tuesday of running a $7 billion Ponzi scheme, a verdict that caps a riches-to-rags trajectory for the former Texas financier and Caribbean playboy.
It was a vindication for the U.S. government, which closed down Stanford's financial empire in February 2009 but had failed for years to address signs that the business was built on air. The Stanford case was the biggest investment fraud since Bernard Madoff's.
Stanford was found guilty on 13 of 14 criminal counts, including fraud, conspiracy and obstructing an investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
As Stanford, 61, was led out of the courtroom after the verdict, he touched his fist to his heart and looked at the bench where his mother and two daughters sat. He has been jailed since his June 2009 arrest.
"We're disappointed in the outcome," said Stanford attorney Ali Fazel. "We do expect an appeal." He said he expects sentencing in several months.
The charges carry a potential prison sentence of more than 200 years if the terms are served consecutively, but Stanford is more likely to face a maximum of about 20 years if, as is typical in white-collar cases, he is sentenced to concurrent prison terms.
The verdict came less than a day after the Houston federal jury said it could not reach a decision, and U.S. District Judge David Hittner instructed jurors to keep deliberating.
Still, the verdict may prove only a moral victory for Stanford's victims. Most have received none of the money back they invested in Stanford's certificates of deposit, though prosecutors are trying to seize more than $300 million in offshore assets tied to Stanford and other entities that have been frozen.
"For all the investors I think there is a sense of relief that they weren't just fools," said Cassie Wilkinson, a Houston investor in Stanford funds who attended the six-week trial. "There was a jury of 12 people who found the same thing - that we were just conned."
Stanford's unraveling was one of the most closely watched fraud cases since Madoff's. Madoff, 73, pleaded guilty in 2009 to orchestrating what prosecutors have called a $64.8 billion Ponzi scheme. He is serving a 150-year prison sentence.
'PERSONAL ATM'
Stanford's personal fortune was once valued at $2.2 billion.
At trial, prosecutors told how he repeatedly raided the bank he owned in Antigua, Stanford International Bank, using it as his "personal ATM."
He bought a castle in Florida for one of his girlfriends and his oldest daughter lived in a million-dollar condominium in Houston. He wore custom-made suits and bankrolled a $20 million prize for an international cricket tournament.
A few hours after the verdict, jurors returned to the courtroom to consider the government's demand that more than $300 million in about 30 bank accounts tied to Stanford and other entities be forfeited. The money is held in accounts in Geneva, the United Kingdom and Canada in the names of Stanford and other entities, according to the government.
"Every single dollar that the U.S. is seeking to forfeit is CD depositor money that stems from Mr. Stanford's crimes and belongs to the victims of his crimes," said prosecutor Andrew Warren. The jury is to hear more testimony in the forfeiture case on Wednesday.
In a telephone interview after the verdict, Kevin Sadler, lead counsel for Ralph Janvey, the court-appointed receiver charged with returning money to Stanford investors, called the verdict an "important milestone" and said it should help in prosecutors' efforts to seize the frozen assets.
At the trial, the government's star witness, former Stanford aide James Davis, testified that he and Stanford faked documents and made up financial reports. They funneled millions of dollars from Stanford International Bank to a secret Swiss bank account that Stanford tapped for his personal use, Davis testified.
Stanford's lawyers portrayed their client as a visionary who was not involved in his firm's daily activities. They blamed Davis for any fraud and argued that Stanford's businesses were viable until the government shut down Stanford Financial Group in Houston in February 2009. Left with no money, Stanford was declared indigent by the court and his defense was paid for with public funds.
Wendell Odom, a criminal defense attorney in Houston who observed much of the trial, said Stanford's attorneys did a good job of discrediting Davis, who has pleaded guilty to three criminal counts, by getting him to admit to being a liar. But they failed to develop an alternative theme for the jury. "There was just too much evidence," he said.
BRAIN INJURY
While in jail awaiting trial, Stanford was beaten by another inmate, leaving him with a brain injury and an addiction to an anti-anxiety medication. After eight months at a prison hospital, he was deemed competent to stand trial despite arguments from his lawyers that he had lost his memory.
Before his trial began on January 23, Stanford's lawyers said their client wanted to tell his story to the jury, but he ultimately did not testify.
Stanford grew up in Mexia, Texas. He studied finance at Baylor University, where Davis, who later become chief financial officer of Stanford Financial Group, was his roommate.
In the 1980s, he became a Houston real estate investor. He later opened an offshore bank on the Caribbean island of Montserrat and, after banking regulations there tightened, he moved his operation to Antigua. The bank specialized in aggressively selling certificates of deposit, his former employees testified. They targeted clients in Latin America, especially Venezuela, and oil company workers on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
In Antigua, he became a philanthropist and sponsor of cricket, the national sport, and was known as "Sir Allen" after being knighted there in 2006. By 2008, Stanford made No. 205 on Forbes magazine's list of the wealthiest Americans.
But questions surfaced about how Stanford International Bank's CDs could persistently pay above market rates. By February 2009, investors were trying to withdraw their money and, on February 17 of that year, the government descended on his headquarters in Houston and shut it down.
Antigua stripped him of his knighthood and seized his local assets.

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? A nuclear deal with the United States may have raised hopes that tensions on the Korean peninsula could ease soon, but rare interviews Friday by The Associated Press with Pyongyang residents suggest deep cynicism of U.S. intentions.
North Korea's military, meanwhile, repeated threats of a "merciless sacred war" against South Korea ? highlighting the lingering animosity between the divided Koreas despite the North's diplomatic breakthrough with Washington.
North Korea's official news agency also reported that new leader Kim Jong Un inspected the Strategic Rocket Force Command of the Korean People's Army. The one-line report dated Friday gave no other details.
The U.S.-North Korea announcement of an agreement to freeze North Korea's nuclear activities in exchange for food aid was seen in Washington as a promising first step toward discussing nuclear disarmament. But in North Korea's capital, where citizens are taught from childhood to hate Americans, skepticism ran deep.
"I heard the news, but I'm not very excited," Jong Yun Hui, 43, told the AP. She said many rounds of talks over the years have failed to result in food or much-needed energy.
"I have no faith in the U.S.," she said. North Koreans are subject to daily propaganda, and the views of those interviewed often reflect what is said by the government.
Under the deal announced Wednesday, North Korea has agreed to suspend uranium enrichment and observe a moratorium on nuclear and long-range missile tests, and to allow the return of U.N. inspectors expelled in 2009. In return, the U.S. promised 240,000 metric tons of food aid, mostly for hungry children, as well as to help facilitate cultural, educational and athletic exchanges.
Next week, a senior North Korean nuclear negotiator is scheduled to travel to New York to attend a security conference organized by Syracuse University in a trip seen as an early sign of warming relations under Kim even as there is widespread skepticism that the deal will hold.
The United States and North Korea fought on opposite sides of the three-year Korean War, finally signing a truce in 1953 to stop a conflict that left millions dead and millions of families divided. They have never signed a peace treaty, and the Korean peninsula remains divided by the world's most heavily fortified border.
From childhood, North Koreans are taught to hate the "American wolves." The U.S. is blamed for the division of the Korean peninsula and is routinely accused of seeking to invade the North on South Korea's behalf.
However, in recent years, many of the posters that urged North Koreans to attack the Americans have been taken down and replaced with ones reflecting the new policy of building up the economy.
News of the deal was trickling down to Pyongyang residents, but many seemed unwilling to accept that North Korea was ready to give up a nuclear program that was the country's pride and joy during late leader Kim Jong Il's rule. Bombs and missiles were considered the chief deterrent against the military threat posed by the United States, which keeps more than 28,000 troops in South Korea.
In a sign that a similar breakthrough in relations between the Koreas appears distant, the North's army threatened in a statement a "merciless sacred war" over the alleged defamation of North Korean pictures and joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises, which began this week and will run through April. North Korea has routinely denounced such drills as a precursor to war.
Two soldiers in Pyongyang expressed anger after hearing the North accuse South Korea's military of writing defamatory remarks below portraits of North Korean leaders.
"What the South Korean military did is beyond imagination," Ri Sang Ik, a 45-year-old lieutenant colonel of the Korean People's Army, told the AP.
In comments echoing state media propaganda, Kim Cho Hyang, an 18-year-old KPA soldier, said in an interview, "I am running out of patience waiting for an order. We have issued enough warnings so far. I cannot wait to storm the den of the group of traitors."
In a video interview with the AP on Friday, North Korean Foreign Ministry official Jong Yong Chol said "the smell of gunpowder goes contrary to the atmosphere" of diplomacy between the U.S. and North Korea.
Another Pyongyang resident, O Myong Ok, sounded supportive of the bid to improve relations between the U.S. and North Korea.
"How wonderful it would be if the tension on the Korean peninsula could be eased by having one- or two-day talks," O, 38, told the AP after hearing that the two sides agreed to the deal after two days of negotiations in Beijing.
But the skepticism quickly took over: "I don't believe that will happen," she said.

Name and Mission Statement ? Open Thread | Savage Minds
In this post I?d like to invite readers to contribute to a statement of purpose for our proposed ?Digital Anthropology? group. The statement should be simple and concise, broad enough to allow some wiggle room but sufficiently narrow that it is clear how we are different.
Currently we are envisioning a group that, like a human brain, is divided into two hemispheres ? one inside the AAA and one on the outside. The group will be dues free and without a budget or elected officers. This organizational structure is not set in stone and may change in the near or distant future as the needs of the group dictate.
We are also looking for a name that is authentic and catchy, but not ephemeral. It should convey to other anthropologists in an instant who we are and what we do without being confusing or overwhelming.
Input on a mission statement will be of great benefit to our working group as we collaborate this month to draw up something formal to share with you here and on Neuroanthropology. After we get enough nominations for the name, maybe we could put it up for a vote somehow.

Putin in power until '24? 10 key questions about election

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Communist party leader Gennady Zyuganov, tycoon and independent candidate Mikhail Prokhorov, Nationalist Liberal Democratic Party leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky and A Just Russia party leader Sergey Mironov will battle for the country's presidency on Sunday.
More than 100 million Russians will go to the polls on Sunday to elect a president who will be in office for the next six years. Msnbc.com's Alastair Jamieson examines the potential outcomes -- and what's at stake.
What do the polls suggest will happen?
Most?polls indicate it will be an outright victory for Vladimir Putin, the current prime minister and former president who has made a deal with his ally Dmitry Medvedev, the former prime minister and current president. Despite initial public outrage over their job swap, Putin is consistently polling at around 50 per cent ? well ahead of the fragmented opposition.
And even if voters do not endorse Putin, his victory is likely to be assured with the help of regional officials loyal to his United Russia party. Having extended the presidential term of office from four to six years, Putin would remain in charge until 2018 ? or 2024, if he won a second term. By then, Putin would have chalked up 24 years in power out of the 33 years since the collapse of Communism thanks to his previous terms as president and prime minister.
If the outcome is such a certainty, why should the U.S. and other Western?countries care?
Experts agree the U.S. will find Russia harder to deal with on Putin?s return. On Wednesday, British think tank Chatham House warned that ?Russia?s stability is at increased risk? due to Putin's determination to stay in power. ?The overriding objective of Vladimir Putin and his team is to preserve the narrow and personalized ruling system that they have built over the past 12 years,? it said in a report. ?Real change, necessarily involving accountability and devolution of power, would disrupt the system. But without real change, Russia cannot develop as effectively as it could, and the Putin system is vulnerable to shock.?

Opposition leaders believe Russia at a crossroads in this election, according to NBC News correspondent Jim Maceda.
?The choice is stark: six, perhaps 12, more years of an authoritative regime that is belligerent to critics ... and which sees the U.S. and its allies as Cold War rivals -- or a new, more democratic Russia that respects its neighbors and no longer snubs the West,? he said.
With less than a week until Russia's presidential elections, protesters of Vladimir Putin have one single message: "Putin, go away." Rock Center's Harry Smith reports.
?The feeling is that a President Putin will instinctively shrink from, rather than encourage, co-operation with the West on a range of issues including Iran and Syria, so there?s a lot at stake for the U.S. in this election," added Maceda, who?has reported on the country since the days of the Soviet Union.
Although Putin enjoys strong domestic popularity, especially in rural Russia, dissatisfaction with his seemingly invincible regime has resulted in unprecedented public protests, with thousands joining recent marches in central Moscow that would have been unthinkable only a few months ago.

If no candidate receives more than 50 per cent of the total votes cast, a second round run-off between the top two contenders will be held within 15 days, according to the country's electoral rules.

Putin?s United Russia is opposed by long-standing Communist rival Gennady Zyuganov and Sergey Mironov of A Just Russia. Two other candidates will liven up the contest. The?first is Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the ultra-nationalist Liberal Democratic Party candidate who once suggested retaking Alaska from the U.S.?His populist remarks have repeatedly landed him in trouble. The second is Mikhail Prokhorov, the 6? 9? international playboy who is the multi-billionaire owner of the New Jersey Nets and business partner of rap star Jay-Z.

Eleven other candidates were summarily rejected by Russia?s Central Elections Committee as ineligible for reasons ranging from paperwork errors to not having the necessary two million verifiable signatures of support.
Is Prokhorov wasting his time?
?On paper, the ?billionaire bachelor? should probably pack it in and focus on his day job and the back half of the NBA season,? said Maceda. ?But guess who is the only candidate surging in the polls? Prokhorov was hovering around one per cent when he launched his campaign in December, now he?s scraping 10 per cent.?
Could his pro-business platform resonate with Russians sick of endemic corruption and bribery? ??He is learning to connect with ordinary Russians,? said Maceda. ?His performance of a Russian rap tune has gone viral on the web and, who knows, maybe if this goes into a second round and enough voters who want neither Putin not Zyuganov rally round the new face, anything could happen.?
But would communists really switch support from Zyuganov to back the world?s 32nd richest man in the event of a second round? ?There is no evidence that suggests that is likely,? said Professor Richard Rose, director of the Centre for the Study of Public Policy at?Glasgow'sUniversity of Strathclyde?and co-author of the "Popular Support for an Undemocratic Regime."
Can the results be trusted anyway?
?Vote fraud was widespread in December?s parliamentary elections and it is likely to be a factor again,? said James Nixey, an expert on Russia with Chatham House and a co-author of Wednesday?s report. ??It is likely a Putin victory will be solidified through fraud before and after, rather than on polling day itself.?
A Wall Street Journal analysis of December?s Duma election results showed United Russia party captured a high share of voters in districts where turnout was well above the national average, suggesting ballot-stuffing.
But although the issue has angered many voters, Russians seem resigned to the problem. ?Russians are not particularly concerned with the process,? said Rose. ?They do not view the elections in the same way an independent observer might.?
What issues have featured in the campaign?
?Wages and economic prosperity are what matter most,? said Nixey. ?There has also been a patriotic narrative from Putin, which strikes a chord with voters.?
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, there were wider questions about what sort of society could be created and how it should be structured. ?Now, most educated professionals spend their time bogged down in how to make schools and hospitals work for the best,? said Rose, adding that there was not widespread demand for political upheaval.

Putin succeeded in imposing some kind of order in the post-Soviet Russia he inherited from the unpredictable Boris Yeltsin. He won a power struggle with the country?s new super-rich oligarchs -- tackling them with the ruthlessness learned during his time?working for the?KGB -- and used media stunts such as bare-chested horseback riding in order to maintain his appeal to ordinary Russians.
Given Putin?s poll lead,? the opposition is not focused on whether Putin wins, but how. ?This election is about the first round,? said Maceda. ?If other candidates do better than expected and Putin is forced into a second round, the opposition will see it as a major victory and the beginning of the end for Putin.?
But a decisive, unchallenged victory for Putin could see the opposition neutered until the next election cycle in six years? time, he added.
So what, if anything, might change?
Putin has pledged more than $160 billion in campaign promises, Maceda?said, so some Russians will reap the benefits of his determination to stay in office.
Further protests could also draw concessions, particularly to the country?s frustrated middle classes. ?The very fact that there have been protests shows that there is the sense of an ending around Putin?s regime, that it is aware of its own mortality,? said Nixey.
However, there is no wider expectation of reform. Data from the country?s Levada Center polling organization shows four out of five Russians don?t believe elections make any difference to national affairs.

Is social media playing a role?
As in the Arab Spring, protesters have used Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to get their message across. In December, video footage and pictures that appeared to show election officials rigging ballots in favor of United Russia were widely shared online, sparking a furious backlash against Medvedev.
The president -- a keen user of social media with 759,000 Twitter followers of his Russian language account and 144,000 in English --?saw thousands of negative comments posted on his official Facebook page by internet users accusing him of burying the issue of election fraud by holding an internal inquiry.
Meanwhile, Russia?s independent elections monitor, Golos, has created an interactive map for voters to upload video and photographs of any election violations on Sunday directly from their mobile phones. The organization, funded largely by Western governments, has been targeted by a documentary on state-controlled television accusing it of serving American interests, according to a New York Times report.

?With security forces being full of young guys carrying machine guns, there is always the fear that these protests could turn nasty,? said Nixey, whose report?suggests a "next wave of protest in the Soviet-era provincial?cities, fuelled by social and economic discontent, is inevitable" However, he added: ?If I had to predict whether there would be serious public disorder I would guess not. The country is generally more secure than those caught up in the Arab Spring.?
Rose added: ?The fragmented opposition would first need to rally around one particular issue, and then use that to create some kind of significant embarrassment for Putin. That doesn?t appear a realistic prospect at the moment.?
