Scientist at Work Blog: Efforts to Save Endangered Hawaiian Birds

David J. Flaspohler, an avian ecologist and conservation biologist at Michigan Technological University, writes from Hawaii, where he is studying the influence of human activities on birds and the natural ecosystems that support them.

Tuesday, May 22

One of the great pleasures of learning bird songs comes in the drowsy predawn twilight. Through the window comes the voice of the first bold male offering up his species? diagnostic song. From my bed in a friend?s cabin 30 miles north of Hilo this morning, the first sound to break the silence is the emphatic, repeated ?whit-cheer!? of the northern cardinal, a bird I grew up hearing in southern Michigan. Next comes the soft cooing of Asian spotted and zebra doves, followed by the occasional harsh notes of the common myna, an import from India. Finally, I hear the slurred warbles of the Japanese white-eye. Later, with a cup of coffee, looking out over the pasture and woodlots spreading down to the sea, I hear and see a rich and complex ecosystem, almost none of which belongs here.

It is quite conceivable that a casual visitor to Hawaii could spend a pleasant holiday of a week or two and not see a single native Hawaiian species. Nearly all native lowland ecosystems in Hawaii have been replaced by nonnative species, including nearly all plants, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Human residents and tourists concentrate themselves in these areas near the ocean, so it is even possible to grow up in many parts of Hawaii thinking that mynas, doves, papaya, eucalyptus, geckos and even mosquitoes have always been here.

To see, hear and smell native Hawaiian forests, you need to get away from the beaches and go up in elevation where most of the exotic birds disappear. Our research in these kipuka forests is aimed at understanding how kipuka size and introduced rats influence kipuka food webs and the native birds. But if the birds in these kipuka are imperiled, some listed and others being considered for listing under the Endangered Species Act, Hawaii is also home to a few bird species even worse off.

To see what intensive care looks like for the most critically endangered birds, I spend a morning at the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center in Volcano, Hawaii. Rich Switzer, manager for the Hawaii Endangered Bird Conservation Program at the San Diego Zoo, meets me at the gate, and we drive up to a compound of one-story buildings scattered within a sparse ohia forest. The mission of Keauhou is to conserve the most critically endangered Hawaiian birds through captive breeding and, with careful planning, reintroduce them back into the wild.

We remove our shoes, a common practice in Hawaii, but here a precaution against spreading disease. We first tour a darkened hallway with rooms on both sides and small vertical windows along the walls, looking into aviaries housing palila, Maui parrotbill, puaiohi and apapane. It is the breeding season, so we speak in whispers. There are only about 500 parrotbills left, and they are found only on a small part of Maui. The puaiohi is even rarer. It is one of only two endemic thrushes left in Hawaii and is found only at the highest elevations on Kaua?i.

Next, we visit the extensive aviaries dedicated to saving one of the rarest birds in the world ? the Hawaiian crow, called an ?alala, which no one has seen in the wild since 2002. Prior to the disappearance of the wild birds, a small population was established in captivity with the hope of preventing their extinction. We enter a control room with a dozen black-and-white screens streaming live video from each aviary. Lisa Komarczyk, a senior research associate at Keauhou, closely monitors a mated pair of ?alala and a nest platform covered with sticks assembled by the female. Lisa records how frequently the female nestles in the nest cup, a precursor to egg laying, and as we watch, a female named Moa Nui sits quietly as her mate perches in the background.

The ?alala is a relative of the crows, ravens and jays found across much of the globe. This family is among the smartest birds, with some species using tools and in other ways showing the capacity for complex thought and for cultural transmission of learned information. Today, with the ?alala facing extinction, such traits cut both ways. A greater capacity for learning might be advantageous as this bird struggles to survive in a changing world. Yet cultural information like where and when to find food and how best to react to predators is at least somewhat learned from experienced older birds. It does not take long in captivity for such abilities to disappear. An earlier effort to reintroduce ?alala into the wild failed in part because the native hawk, the ?io, was able to capture birds that may have been weakened by introduced disease or lost adaptive responses to the predator, or both.

As we watch the monitor, Rich points to a video screen showing a female sitting quietly on her nest. He and Lisa note some rhythmic head movements and contractions of the bird?s body. We note that the fine black feathers on the bird?s head have become erect, and the bird gives a subtle but distinct shudder. They?ve seen egg laying many times before, but for me, this is thrilling. I ask if they think she just laid, but they are noncommittal. The female shuffles a bit and rises to reveal a shiny spotted egg. Bending her head down, she uses her bill to delicately arrange the egg beneath her. She then settles her warm belly down over the egg and waits to see what the future will bring.

Second chance for 'Manhattanhenge' spectacle

Mike Segar / Reuters file

The sun shines down 42nd Street below the landmark Chrysler Building at sunset on July 12, 2009, during Manhattanhenge.

By Alan Boyle

The first night of this year's Manhattanhenge season was a washout, due to cloudy weather, but there's another chance to see the sunset turn the streets of New York aglow tonight.

Manhattanhenge refers to the perfectly placed alignment of the setting sun amid the canyons of midtown Manhattan's east-west streets. The phenomenon, sometimes known as the Manhattan solstice, occurs every year around Memorial Day and major-league baseball's All-Star break.

The Hayden Planetarium's director, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, says future archaeologists might well conclude that these spots on the calendar marked important rites of summer for New Yorkers. (And they wouldn't be far wrong.)

Tyson's the one who came up with the term "Manhattanhenge." Think of it as a modern-day, unintentional version of Stonehenge, with New York skyscrapers standing in for the stones of the 5,000-year-old monument in England.

Stonehenge was constructed to have its stones line up with the rays of the sun on important astronomical dates such as the summer solstice. Manhattan's street grid, however, doesn't line up with the solstice or the equinox. The relevant streets, which reflect the Commissioner's Plan of 1811, are offset 29 degrees from east and west. That would spoil the sunset view on an equinox or a solstice ??but on the proper dates, the sun reaches the cleft between skyscrapers just in time to set the streets aglow.

This year's first opportunity for seeing Manhattanhenge's glory came Tuesday night at 8:17 p.m. ET. Under ideal conditions, a pretty half-setting sun could have been seen centered in the gap between the buildings. Unfortunately, conditions were not ideal. In disappointed Twitter tweets, the sight quickly came to be termed "Cloudhenge."

Andrew Dallos via Twitpic

Andrew Dallos' picture of Manhattanhenge, snapped at sunset on Tuesday from 42nd Street, provides a typical view of "Cloudhenge."

"A cloudy and stormy night, so no sun," reported Andrew Dallos, a producer for "The Rachel Maddow Show" on MSNBC who camped out on 42nd Street.

Tonight, on Wednesday night, New Yorkers could get a chance to see the sun's full disk just touching the horizon in the gap at 8:16 p.m. ET. It all depends on the weather: The current forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with a slight chance of thunderstorms ? which at least sounds more promising than last night's weather.

Even if tonight's opportunity is clouded out, there'll be a Manhattanhenge replay after the summer solstice, with a full-sun viewing at 8:24 p.m. on July 11 and a half-sun opportunity at 8:25 p.m. July 12.

To enhance your Manhattanhenge viewing experience, Tyson suggests positioning yourself as far east as possible, while still making sure you can see New Jersey when you look west across the avenues. "Clear cross streets include 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd, 57th and several streets adjacent to them," he writes in his viewing guide. "The Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building render 34th Street and 42nd Street especially striking vistas."

A time-lapse view of Manhattanhenge from 2011.

Thanks in part to Tyson's efforts, Manhattanhenge is the best-known of the modern-day monumental alignments. The clear prospect to the west between New York's towering buildings makes for a nearly unbeatable scene. But other locales have their own "Henge" dates, due to the unintentional effects of a street-grid layout or an architectural feature. Here's a sampling:

Baltimorehenge: The sun lines up with downtown Baltimore's street grid for sunrise on Sept. 18 and March 25, and for sunset on Sept. 29 and March 12. The Baltimore Sun's Frank Roylance explains it all for you.

Phillyhenge: The sunrise moments have come around March 1 and Oct. 11, and sunset alignments are around April 4 and Sept. 5. Precise dates vary from year to year. The Photographer's Ephemeris helps you find the proper lineup.

Torontohenge: The sun lines up with Toronto's street grid for sunrise on April 17-18 and Aug. 23-24, and for sunset on Feb. 15-16 and Oct. 23-24. This entry from Torontopedia helps you figure it out.

Other urban "Henges":?If downtown streets line up more precisely with a true east-west axis???as they do in Chicago, Washington and Portland, Maine, for example ? the "Henge" moments come around the March 20-21 spring equinox and the Sept. 21-22 autumn equinox.

MIT-Henge?in Cambridge, Mass: The rays of the setting sun light up the "Infinite Corridor" at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in late January and during the second week of November. This video fills in the details.

Do you know of other monumental alignments? Clue in the rest of us by leaving a comment below.

DNA designs done faster and cheaper

B. Wei et al. / Wyss Institute, Harvard

This atomic-force microscopy shows 100 shapes, each created from tiles of DNA strands. Each shape takes up a space measuring 150 by 150 nanometers, or roughly one-thousandth the width of a human hair.

By Alan Boyle

The DNA molecule serves as the code of life, but it also serves as handy building material for nanoscale structures?? and newly published research shows how patterns as complex as letters, numbers and smiley faces can be created far more cheaply and quickly than previously thought.

Harvard researchers demonstrate the latest twists in this week's issue of the journal Nature. The process involves laying out short segments?of DNA in a tile-shaped pattern determined by custom-designed chemical bonds. Those single-stranded tiles, in turn, can assemble themselves into larger shapes like Lego blocks, depending on how the bonds attach to one another. Different recipes for mixing the tiles together will produce different shapes.

The researchers ? Bryan Wei, Mingjie Dai and Peng Yin???estimate that the process yielded the desired structure 12 to 17 percent of the time. That yield is far from perfect, but it could be perfectly acceptable for a process involving thousands upon thousands of self-assembling molecules.

The technique updates a construction strategy that was first pioneered in the 1980s. Back then, it took two years to create a 7-nanometer-wide cube from 10 strands of DNA, Caltech's Paul Rothemund and Aarhus University's Ebbe Sloth Andersen observed in a Nature commentary on the research. In contrast, the newly reported results suggest that far more complex shapes, measuring more than 100 nanometers across, could be churned out at an average rate of one per hour. (A human hair is roughly 100,000 nanometers wide.)

Another attractive factor has to do with the cost: An alternate method for creating nanoscale shapes, known as DNA origami, twists one long molecular strand into a desired shape rather than using lots of smaller tiles. But for each different shape, a new set of molecular "staples" has to be synthesized at a cost of roughly $1,000, according to the Nature commentary. The Harvard researchers' method involves creating a $7,000 set of tiles that could theoretically produce 2 X 10^93 shapes. That's a 2 followed by 93 zeros.

In their Nature paper, Wei and his colleagues showed off 100 shapes ??including the Roman alphabet, numerical digits, punctuation marks, the peace sign, Chinese characters and 10 kinds of emoticons. They made use of a custom-designed computer program to aid in the design of the shapes and control the liquid-handling robot that mixed the DNA ingredients.

"This advance truly brings DNA nanotechnology into the rapid-prototyping age, and enables DNA shapes to be tailored for every experiment," Rothemund and Andersen wrote in their commentary.

One of the puzzles surrounding the research has to do with why it works so well. Experts had thought that when smaller strands of DNA were mixed together, they wouldn't come together correctly and completely to form the desired larger shapes. The authors suggested that the timing of the chemical reactions could be the key to their success.?"It is conceivable that sparse and slow nucleation followed by fast growth allows complete assembly," they wrote.

Nature News quoted Yin as saying that "any technological applications are highly speculative" ??but if the process can be extended to a mirror-image type of DNA that isn't broken down by cellular processes, it could lead to the development of nanoscale devices for drug delivery or molecular-scale medical monitoring.?The researchers say they're in the midst of obtaining a provisional patent for the process.

In their commentary, Rothemund and Andersen compared DNA assembly to carpentry.

"Wei and colleagues' findings remind us that we are still just apprentice DNA carpenters, and will embolden others to mix hundreds of DNA strands together against prevailing wisdom," they wrote. "The results will probably surprise us."

More about molecular carpentry:

The research reported in Nature, "Complex Shapes Self-Assembled From Single-Stranded DNA Tiles," was funded by the Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and Harvard's Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering.

Was The Communications Clinic Hired To Deal With Mission To ...

Apparently so.

On Monday, May 16, the Irish Missionaries Union circulated its Strategic Plan 2011- 2014 to its members.

In it, the IMU said it was preparing for an RTE expose (Mission to Prey). It also said it planned to hold a workshop for members to deal with the expected fallout from the RTE show.

This was exactly a week before RTE Prime Time Investigates aired Mission to Prey, on Monday, May 23,

A day before the broadcast, on Sunday, May 22, the Sunday Business Post wrote a story about the document but added details of how Terry Prone (above), a director of The Communications Clinic ? and the wife of RTE Board chairman Tom Savage (top), also a director of The Communications Clinic ? was hired by the IMU in advance of the Mission to Prey broadcast.

The SBP article (behind paywall) said: ?The body representing Irish Catholic missionary congregations is developing a strategy to prepare its members for an onslaught of allegations of sexual abuse. The Irish Missionary Union (IMU) is understood to have hired several public relations experts, including Terry Prone, to manage the fallout from an RTE Prime Time documentary, to be screened this week, about allegations of sexual abuse by Irish priests in Africa.?

On Monday, May 23, RTE broadcast Mission to Prey, despite offers by Fr Reynolds to take a paternity test to prove his innocence.

On September 22, 2011, the High Court heard how two paternity tests showed Fr Reynolds was not the father of the woman?s child, ultimately leading to Fr Reynold?s vindication.

On May 9, 2012, Tom Savage, told Newstalk he did not learn of the controversy surrounding the Mission To Prey programme until September 2011 ? three months after Fr Reynolds started to take legal action and four months after his own PR firm was apparently employed to deal with the fall out from the show?s findings.

He said: ?When we were told at our September board meeting. Because obviously if you are dealing with a huge organisation like RTE, with so much output in so many areas, the board is never informed on an ongoing basis of every single issue that crops up. And it tends to be that only when problems emerge and they?re either raised directly with the board or they?re raised through the Director General?s report that comes to us at the board meeting, the first item on the board meeting, that we have each month, we heard about it in September.?

Mr Savage also told an Oireachtas Committee meeting last week: ?(The RTE board)??did not know until the evidence came that the first paternity test had shown that Fr Reynolds was not the parent. That was when we were informed. I was informed just in the lead-in to the September board meeting.?

Birth Control Options With Femodene ED

Many sexually active couples know they are not ready for parenthood, and this is why contraception is so beneficial for people. There are numerous contraceptive options available, with the most popular type being combined oral contraception. An example of a combined oral contraceptive is Femodene ED, which contains the artificial versions of the female hormones oestrogen (ethinylestradiol) and progestogen (gestodene). Combined oral contraceptives like Femodene ED work by influencing the normal menstrual cycle.

Femodene ED pills prevent you from falling pregnant by modifying the reproductive system in three unique ways. They cause the thickening of the mucus at the neck of the cervix in order to make it difficult for a sperm to enter the womb and fertilise an egg. Femodene ED also stops ovulation due to which the release of an egg by the fallopian tubes is prevented, which means there would be no egg to get fertilised by sperm.

Finally, it cause the thinning of the uterine lining, meaning that even if an egg gets fertilised accidentally it won't be able to implant itself in the womb and grow there and thus you cannot conceive.

Birth control pills like this one are very convenient to use and allow you greater freedom than some other contraceptive methods. Femodene ED also offers you additional benefits such as regulating your periods and reducing heavy and painful periods and other discomforting symptoms related to PMS. This pill should be taken once a day for 21 days, followed by a break of seven days during which you are most likely to experience a withdrawal bleed. You will be completely protected even during this pill-free break of seven days.

If you forget to take one or two pills then you will still be protected, provided you take the last pill you missed and continue using the pack as normal. If you miss three or more birth control pills then the medication will no longer be effective. You would be asked to use a barrier contraceptive for the next seven days. You should completely avoid this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or suffering from blood, heart or circulatory issues. If you have problems related to migraines or decreased liver function you should not take this pill. There are several other health complications that could stop you from using this oral contraceptive.

You should discuss your present and past medical history with your doctor or medical professional before purchasing this contraceptive. As expected from prescription medication, this birth control pill may also cause some mild side effects that should pass away as your body gets used to the flow of artificial hormones. The common side effects are nausea, headache, vomiting, weight gain, thrush, breakthrough bleeding, low sex drive and fluid retention. You can buy this medication through numerous registered online pharmacies after completing a confidential online consultation with a licensed doctor.

"I think that we have a good team," coach Kevin O'Sullivan said. "I think that we had a good year. I'd agree with everybody that I don't think we have played our best yet, which is encouraging."

Florida (42-18) was selected Monday as the top seed for the 64-team tournament and will host one of 16 four-team, double-elimination regionals that begin Friday.

"That was a very close vote," said Kyle Kallander, chairman of the Division I baseball committee. "The committee really discussed at length who deserved to be that No. 1 overall. There were several deserving teams."

The other national seeds, in order, are: UCLA, Florida State, Baylor, Oregon, North Carolina, LSU and two-time defending College World Series champion South Carolina.

"We had four teams that were in serious consideration for that last top national seed, that No. 8 seed," Kallander said. "It was very competitive in the evaluation process."

Kallander said the Gators' overall body of work ? including a 21-10 record against top 25 teams ? put them in front of the field.

History has not been kind to the No. 1 overall seeds, though. Only once has a top seed gone on to win the College World Series: Miami in 1999, the first year the NCAA went to its current tournament format.

"Obviously, this is a great time of the year for everybody," said O'Sullivan, whose team opens against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Bethune-Cookman (34-25). "We're excited to be in it. We're excited to be home."

The Gamecocks (40-17) are trying to join the 1970-74 Southern California squads as the only teams to win three or more consecutive national titles. South Carolina opens against Manhattan (33-25), the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament champion.

Florida and South Carolina are among a tournament field-leading eight Southeastern Conference teams, including Arkansas, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

The Atlantic Coast Conference is second with seven teams: Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Virginia.

The 16 regional winners move on to the best-of-three super regionals. Those eight winners advance to the College World Series, which begins June 15 in Omaha, Neb., at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.

Miami (36-21) is in the tournament for the 40th straight year, extending its own record, while Florida State is making its 35th consecutive appearance. Dayton (31-28) and Samford (39-21) are making their tournament debuts, while Valparaiso (35-23) will play in a regional for the first time since 1968.

"I don't think our guys will be intimidated at all," said Valparaiso coach Tracy Woodson, a former major leaguer. "We've already played some great teams on our schedule this year."

Among those not in this year are Texas (30-22), which last missed out in 1998, and Utah Valley (47-12), which led Division I in wins but had a low RPI. Kallander said both were among 12 schools considered for the last couple of spots.

Utah Valley plays in the Great West Conference, which doesn't receive an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. The Wolverines won 40 of their last 41 games, and 45 of their last 49.

"We've done everything we can to control our destiny," coach Eric Madsen said after Utah Valley won its third straight Great West tournament. "Forty out of 41, that's incredible."

Kallander, commissioner of the Big South Conference, said the lack of quality non-conference opponents was a key factor in the Wolverines being left out.

"They did very well against that schedule, so what you've got to do is go out in your non-conference schedule and schedule stronger, and of course, you have to have some success against that schedule," Kallander said. "They did have a couple of good wins, no doubt, and scheduled a few very good teams in the schedule, but it wasn't quite enough for the committee."

Two teams with losing records made the field of 64 ? Creighton (26-28) and Sacred Heart (25-30) ? by winning their conference tournaments.

Japan robot lab readies second prototype for work at crippled nuclear reactor

IDG News Service - A Japanese robotics lab has developed a new emergency response prototype that will soon be put to work at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in northern Japan.

(See footage of the robot in action and other projects on YouTube.)

The robot, called "Rosemary," is about the size of a lawn mower and has four extended treaded feet that swivel up and down to help it climb over obstacles. It can ascend at angles over 60 degrees and can carry instruments and other payload weighing up to 60 kilograms (132 pounds).

"We tested the robot's various electronic components using an exposure test," said Takeshi Nishimura, a researcher at the Future Robotics Technology Center. "It can be used without any additional shielding or protection."

The robot will be sent to Fukushima in the next few months, he added. It is the successor to a robot from the center that was originally developed for disasters in subways, but was put to use at the nuclear plant.

The Future Robotics Technology Center is giving demonstrations of the robot along with several other projects at its new campus in the complex at the base of the newly opened Tokyo Skytree broadcasting tower in Tokyo. The center is affiliated with the Chiba Institute of Technology and is a recipient of government funding for robot development.

In Japan, where cutting-edge robots are a point of national pride and receive huge development grants from the government, there was dismay when foreign PackBots from U.S. maker iRobot were among the first to explore the damaged nuclear facility after it was ravaged by an earthquake and tsunami last year. Japanese researchers have responded with an armada of projects to develop robots for use there and in the high-radiation zones nearby.

The center is also showing a table that responds to and projects images on to punch cards laid on its surface, as well as a Mars explorer simulator.

De Niro talks to Bates grads, gets honorary degree

(AP) ? As he received an honorary doctorate Sunday, Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro told Bates College graduates that despite his own lack of formal education, he made out OK.

During a 15-minute address that was by turns sincere and irreverent, De Niro drew a steady stream of laughter from the 463 graduating seniors and more than 5,000 onlookers at the private, liberal arts college's campus.

De Niro, who quit high school to pursue an acting career, was one of three high-profile guests who received honorary degrees at the Bates commencement. PBS "Newshour" senior correspondent Gwen Ifill and Princeton University molecular biologist Bonnie Bassler also were honored.

But it was De Niro who stole the show.

"In many ways, leaving school when I did it was an advantage. I saved nearly $6,000 by not having to pay tuition and expenses for four years of education," he said. "I feel a little foolish, because if I had waited until now not to go to college, I could have saved around a quarter of a million."

Looking back, he said, "it worked out just fine. I saved the money, and I got the degree."

The honorary doctorate of fine arts was conferred by Nancy Cable, interim president at Bates. Trustee Michael Chu, De Niro's friend, presented the degree.

De Niro also offered the graduates some serious advice.

"If you're an actor, always be true to your character," he said. "If you're not an actor, have character and always be true to yourself."

De Niro won a best actor Academy Award for "Raging Bull" and best supporting actor Oscar for "The Godfather, Part II." He earned four more Oscar nominations.

Interview with Roberta Medina, vice-president of Rock in Rio

Young, educated and well- traveled, Roberta Medina, is president of Dream Factory and responsible for the organization of the Rock in Rio in Europe music event.

Living in Portugal for nine years, this outgoing Carioca (native from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) told us about how Brazilians perceive Portugal (and how telenovelas, or soap operas are changing that), how it is good to live in Lisbon and what we can do to promote our city in the land of Sun and Samba.?

What made you land in Lisbon to do the Rock in Rio (RinR) event?
When my dad, Roberto Medina, decided that he wanted to repeat RinR, ten years after the second edition (which took place in Rio in 1991, while the first edition was in 1985), he had a dream to use the event as a way of mobilization for a better world ? and he wanted to do it worldwide. A fellow Brazilian who lived here insisted that there should be a RinR in Lisbon: ?Roberto, you have to do it.? But RinR in Rio de Janeiro was already something with such a complexity, that the dream stayed grounded. After having finished the year 2000 edition, we started to work on 2002?s edition, sponsored by America Online-AOL. Then came the 9/11 attacks in 2001 and everything came to a halt. We were forced to look for alternatives. Roberto told this guy: -?if you can land an interview with the mayor, in which basic structures and services such as cleaning and security can be assured, I?ll fly to Lisbon.?

We thought that this meeting would never happen, but two weeks later it got scheduled.

And things went well ?
Roberto arrived here, some initial meetings took place with the Town Hall which started a straightforward process. After a protocol of intent was agreed, we all came to Portugal to seek sponsorships. The event was based on three pillars: a)with local governments, where infrastructure and basic services of the city function in an exchange basis, because the RinR is a tool to promote the city; b) with media partners, in which we deliver content and they brand and promote the event; c) sponsors who deliver the sponsorship and use the contents and the event to give visibility to their products. Once we gained critical mass, I came in with the production team, and together we began the preparation phase including the booking of artists.?

At that time, did Roberta know Lisbon?
No. Brazilians are very US-centered, they grow up looking to Los Angeles, New York and Disneyland. We study the history of Portugal until 1500, until the age of eleven, but then we lose the focus on Portugal. When we started talking about coming to Portugal, it was like: ?what is it? Is it in Europe?? Europe was not in our lives. My paternal grandfather was Portuguese and he left to Brazil at a young age, not having any European-Portuguese accent. He died and I don?t have this memory of him as Portuguese. My family on the maternal side was also Portuguese, but I had never acknowledged this fact. It was only when I traveled to Portugal that everything came in as an avalanche. I realized that there are a lot of things in the lives of Brazilians that are related to Portugal, but we don?t realize it. When I arrived here I had this typical misconception that Brazilians have of the country: Portugal is something very old, frozen in time, around the year 1500, with old ladies wearing head scarves and mustaches.?

You got it wrong?
My first minutes in Lisbon, on the way out of the airport were on the Gago Coutinho Avenue and soon I felt how my thoughts had been misguided. I was expecting to come to a place with ??old houses, and now here I was, in a normal avenue discovering a modern Lisbon. I later found a lot of things culturally similar to those in Brazil and vice versa. Because your people arrived there and left us everything they brought. But then came the physical distance between populations and we forgot about Portugal. On the other way around, quite the opposite happened: the soap operas started to show up here and people got to know all about Brazil.?

And now you spend more time in Lisbon than in Brazil ?
I have been living here for nine years. In 2005 I still divided my time between Lisbon and Brazil and in October, when I returned to Portugal, I realized that I had moved here by choice. Until then I hadn?t thought about it, I was coming here to do my job with RinR, not knowing for how long I would stay. I ended up making the event ?The Largest Christmas Tree?, then another RinR, and later another ?tree?? by this time it had become clear my identification with this place, feeling good about living in Lisbon, the well-being, the relationships built here, many of them solid and happy. I was living fine so I settled here.?

Has it not happened to you like with some Brazilians who, upon returning to Brazil after a long stay here, are said to have a European Portuguese accent?
Definitely. Even in the form of writing. When I got here I realized that a letter or e-mail ended with ?our best wishes? (os nossos melhores cumprimentos): ?I found this to be out of this world. Now, when I write to Brazil, I don?t know how to end a letter. The way that is used there, ?sincerely,? is horrible, I strongly dislike it. In order not to leave anyone baffled, I created another way. These are situations in which you move towards a??

Gray zone?
Exactly. The strangeness, the feeling of being nowhere and everywhere, all at the same time. Last year, I was in Brazil because of RinR there. Then it all came back. And not so much because of the different accent. There are expressions and words that you use differently, the rhythm, the intonation, these are things that take people by surprise. I know a producer there with that typical ?Carioca? accent. When I went to talk to her, I thought she was joking around. I then realized: My God! Do we talk like that? There, I?m Portuguese and here? well, I?m from Rio!?

Is it very different to promote a Rock in Rio event in Lisbon or elsewhere, such as Madrid?
It sure is. Everything is different. When we arrive at some place to do the RinR and begin to talk, there is always someone who says, ?but this here is not Brazil.? It happened with the first international event, in Lisbon, and it continues to happen wherever we land. You arrive armed with all your international experience, confident, only to hear someone saying that things in that place don?t work like that. It is always a super-intense process. In Poland, you arrive and your hear, ?this is not Brazil or Portugal!?; then getting? to Madrid: ?this is not Brazil, or Portugal, neither Poland.? There is always a different process, which is purely local, cultural and behavioral. Then there is the public. The Portuguese public is very polite, very gentle. It is very easy to work in Lisbon. The event goes incident free with all the madness that it has. Here things work smoothly, without issues.?

What do you really like in Lisbon?
Lisbon, like the rest of Portugal and Europe, has this matured civilization that Brazil doesn?t have. It produces a healthy balance between the time you devote to your professional activity and that which is devoted to your personal life. Coming from a reality where you have to drive with your doors locked, and fearful when a barefoot child approaches you, this has a devastating effect on a human standpoint and only works if you?re cold hearted or insensitive. In Brazil, people live on a 24-hour-alert-mode. Here, a person does not have to be afraid to be out on the streets. This quality of life is absolutely unbeatable.?

It is admirable the way you live in society. And Lisbon has it all: with a rich cultural offer, (greater than that offered in Rio de Janeiro), plenty of nightlife, restaurants, night clubs, and bars. The difference is that in Rio you?re on the beach, while here you go to the beach. In a society with so much inequality like in Brazil, that?s a good thing, it is democratic because on the beach, wearing a bathing suit or a bikini, everyone is equal.?

Don?t you miss the sun of Rio during these long Lisbon winters?
Not really. When I came here to stay, it was in January, thus coming from the Brazilian summer and the change was complicated. The solution was to put on a ton of clothing, looking like Bibendum, the Michelin man. I came to realize that I was wearing the wrong type of clothes. I then adapted. The changing of the seasons brings a process rich in sensations.?

What has changed in the way Brazilians see Lisbon?
Still not as much as I?d like, but it is changing. The fact that Lisbon has a RinR made Brazilians curious. It was a provocative thing to bring something young and modern to Lisbon, which keeps Brazilians asking: ?What is the RinR event doing there?? Then there was the Brazilian soccer coach Luiz Felipe Scolari (aka Felip?o) who led Portugal brilliantly to the UEFA Euro cup finals. When Brazil was eliminated in the 2006 FIFA World cup, Brazilians started to rally around the Portuguese football team . You could see Portuguese flags all over the place, this was the most successful campaign ever seen. Since then, everything has been changing: we have an agreement with the Municipality of Lisbon for the city to be featured in a soap opera. It was the first action of international merchandising done by TV Globo. That stuck a sympathetic ?chord for Brazilians. It was supposed to be five minutes of scenes from Lisbon in the novel and it ended up with 36 minutes. Until then, the character who would have said that he was going to a business meeting in New York now says that he was heading to a business meeting in Lisbon. In Brazil the main communication media are the novels which dictate opinion, fashion and trends, besides influencing and determining behavior. If the main character wanders around with a hat and cowboy boots in a hot blazing summer, everyone will do the same.?

I remember the presentation of this campaign and also some skepticism on the part of Brazilians: ?Lisbon, an ancient city and destiny of characters in the novels??. ?Apparently, it did work.
It all depends on how you package it. Portuguese like to present Lisbon through its history and through Fado. Surely this is important since it belongs to the city?s identity, but you cannot leave behind other things. People today also want to have fun, go out to eat, have a walk, and Portugal has all of this: you drive across the country in a few hours and you have a whole lot of things to see. For some time we didn?t show the modern Lisbon. It?s not enough just going after churches and historic events; we must show how people have fun. In this novel, the characters were young and trendy and went on evening outings.?

Before, Brazilian tourists would arrive completely unknowing. Today they already know beforehand many things about Lisbon.
We must acknowledge the merit of the teams that have been promoting a modern Lisbon. Also, the culture of Brazilian tourists has risen. They are not traveling anymore just for the sake of traveling and clinging on to old stereotypes about the Portuguese.

The greatest writer of Brazilian soap operas, Aguinaldo Silva ? a lover of Lisbon, lives here half of the time ? he wrote a novel whose main character (the actress Lidia Cabral) is a Portuguese who left at an early age to Brazil and interacts with another character ( the portuguese actor, Paulo Rocha), who owns a bakery, the typical ?portuga? with a European Portuguese accent, humorous, very handsome, blue-eyed, young, healthy looking and everything that was assumed that the Portuguese are not. This novel, which is now passing in Brazil, is a public service to the image of Portugal. The characters make a toast with Portuguese champagne. Awesome.?

Best place for a late afternoon in Lisbon?
Hmm, so many good things ? Perhaps the terrace of the Hotel Bairro Alto.?

Best place to spend a night out?
A nice dinner in a restaurant already makes my night. But there is that spectacular place, the Restaurant Guilty. But there are so many more places that I loved ??

For someone who has only a few available hours in Lisbon before hopping on a plane to another destination, what would you advise not to miss?
I would suggest a tour that goes along the Avenida da Liberdade, the Baixa downtown and Bel?m, which has a garden that is the most beautiful of all and has that truly stunning Monastery which is the Mosteiro dos Jer?nimos.
