Believing you can stop panic attacks is the basis for recovery. In the nightmare of a panic attack all you can think of is how to make it go away, to stop it. Your internal voice is screaming for relief from the madness and fear. It is so easy for self esteem and confidence to seep away. You can easily slip into being silent about what is happening. In silence you become powerless in a downward spiral.
You can stop panic attacks. Here are a few steps you can do right away:
1. Relaxation: When we relax we are able to connect with our bodies and feel into what is happening for us. In this state we start the process of control from the inside. When a pebble is thrown into a pond, the ripples emanate outwards from the center. If we regard our bodies, minds and emotions as the center, then everything emanates out from us. The key to relaxing lies with our breath.
Slow, mindful, easy, deep breathing facilitates a slowing down of our physiological system, our minds over-activity, and dissolves much of our emotional turbulence.
The breathing is best done on our own, either sitting, or perhaps walking gently in nature. Deep breathing can be accompanied with silence or soothing music. Essentially it is important to find the environment and style that works best for each of us. This is the first of the steps in The Linden Method.
2. Distraction: By diverting our minds away from obsessing about the stress and fear of panic attacks, we get to experience relief. The idea is to stop negative thoughts and replace them with something more affirming.
Gratitude is an approach I find particularly powerful and fast acting. It might be gratitude for living where I am, having food on the table, or for being surrounded by caring people in my life. There is always something to be grateful for in our lives. Take a little time and start a Gratitude Journal ? write down anything that comes to mind that evokes gratitude. When we feel gratitude we become present to ?the moment? where it is difficult to feel panic and anxiety.
3. Hobbies: Charles Linden encourages sufferers of panic to take up a hobby which really engages and immerses us in a cocoon of activity that we love. This is something we need to choose from our hearts and feel the passion of commitment and focus.
4. Acceptance: Our default position is to resist the emotional impact of panic and anxiety. The paradox is that once we accept where we are without the compulsion to ?get out of it?, we are in a more empowered and better position to take the steps to STOP our panic. Accepting the reality that panic is like a sudden shower of rain over which we have no control, gives us a freedom to not fight and to choose to slip into a place where we can observe our own experiences and marvel at the miracle of life even when it is difficult.
These steps are the bedrock for change, to take back your life and reclaim it. To stop panic attacks dead in their tracks. Charles Linden has put a wonderful program together in The Linden Method. You can access it online.
