Obama Says He's the Miami Heat, Romney is Jeremy Lin

Obama is competitive. It's a requirement, one would hope, to run for President. But the New York Times' Jodi Kantor writes that Obama might over competitive. Deep in the story is a juicy anecdote of Obama comparing himself to Lebron and co. in Miami, and Romney to Jeremy Lin.

RELATED: Why Romney Is Stealing Business Donors from Obama

First: Obama's competitiveness. It's extensive.?Like, he's even?competitive?when it comes to recreational bowling. In February, when someone asked if he had what it took to win again in November, he opted for a basketball analogy to get his point across:

This February, in an otherwise placid meeting with Democratic governors ? routine policy questions, routine presidential replies ? Gov. Brian Schweitzer of Montana asked Mr. Obama if he had what it took to win the 2012 race.

For a moment Mr. Obama looked annoyed, a White House aide said, as if he thought Mr. Schweitzer was underestimating him. Then he came alive. ?Holy mackerel, he lit up,? Mr. Schweitzer said in an interview. ?It was like a light switch coming on.?

No matter what moves Mr. Romney made, the president said, he and his team were going to cut him off and block him at every turn. ?We?re the Miami Heat, and he?s Jeremy Lin,? Mr. Obama said, according to the aide.

This seems a little odd, considering in March the President was all about Linsanity. But it's true: Jeremy Lin played horribly against the Miami Heat last year. This, from a game report in February: "Lin had averaged just under 24 points and a little more than nine assists per game during that magical 11-game span, but finished this one with just eight points, six rebounds, and three assists, to go along with eight turnovers." Maybe Obama's quote happened a few nights after this game. And it's worth noting that the Miami Heat went on to win the NBA championship. But it's Jeremy Lin's story that muddles his point. Cheering for the Heat is like cheering for the Yankees, or for the empire in Star Wars. But, if you must go with a Heat analogy, ProBasketball Talk's Kurt Helin has a better option for you, Mr. President:

RELATED: Romney's Medicare Plan Gets Bipartisan Cover

?

I think the analogy you want is ?We?re the Miami Heat, he?s the Brooklyn Nets.? That?s a team put together by a billionaire with most of his money locked up overseas, a team that has some talent but is unproven, a team that was put together on an old-rules model not really thinking through the long-term consequences... I think that is more what you were going for.

Obama is no stranger to basketball analogies. At a fundraising event last week, he?compared the Presidential race?to a basketball game. "I can't resist a basketball analogy. We are in the fourth quarter, we're up by a few points, but the other side is coming strong and they play a little dirty," he said. If anything it's surprising Obama didn't go for a Michael Jordan analogy when talking to Schweitzer, considering he's a Bulls fan. "We're the Jordan-era Bulls, and he's John Starks," he could have said. He also talked about Jordan's "legendary"?competitiveness. We were waiting for Kantor to make the competitive connection between Jordan and Obama. Was it too easy??

Supernatural 'Possession' leads box office

Diyah Pera / Lionsgate

"Possession" is reportedly based on a true story.

By Reuters

?Supernatural thriller "The Possession" ranked No. 1 on U.S. and Canadian box office charts on Sunday, dethroning two-time champ "Expendables 2" and setting up for a likely win over the long U.S. holiday weekend.

"Possession" pulled in $17.7 million in North American ticket sales from Friday through Sunday and was expected to reach $21.3 million on Monday, according to studio estimates compiled by Reuters. Crime drama "Lawless" finished in second place, and "Expendables 2" took the No. 3 slot.

Political documentary "2016: Obama's America," which dropped from seventh place last week to ninth pulled in $5.1 million over three days as it expanded across the country following a strong showing a week ago. The politically conservative critique of President Obama played in more than 1,700 theaters, up from about 1,100.

"Possession" is a horror film inspired by a newspaper account of a family that fights a demon known as a Dibbuk in ancient Yiddish folklore. The spirit resides in a Dibbuk box and is said to possesses people's bodies with the intention of devouring them.

In "Possession," the Dibbuk enters the body of a young woman, leaving her parents to figure out how to stop it. Kyra Sedgwick and Madison Davenport star in the film.

Another new film, "Lawless," nabbed $9.6 million at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters over the weekend. The movie stars Shia LaBeouf, Jason Clarke and Tom Hardy as bootlegging brothers in Prohibition-era Virginia.

Updated sales figures for the weekend's movies will come on Monday, when the United States and Canada mark the Labor Day (Labour Day) holiday. The weekend typically ranks as one the year's slowest as summer winds down and studios reserve their next big releases for holidays in November and December.

Through Sunday, action movie "Expendables 2" had dropped to the No. 3 spot after spending two weeks leading the North American charts. The movie stars Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and other 1980s tough guys as a group of spies sent on an easy mission that turns dangerous when they seek revenge for a murder.

It earned $8.8 million through Sunday and was expected to hit $11 million on Monday.

The No. 4 spot belonged to another action sequel, "The Bourne Legacy" starring Jeremy Renner as a spy who tries to escape pursuers from the CIA. The film earned $7.2 million through three days.

The weekend's other new movie, family film "Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure," sat in 28th place with domestic sales of $448,131.

Lions Gate Entertainment released "Possession" and "Expendables 2." Rocky Mountain Pictures distributed "2016," and privately-held Weinstein Co. distributed "Lawless." "Bourne Legacy" was released by Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp. Kenn Viselman Presents released "Ooogieloves."

Inhabitat's Week in Green: go-kart made of Lego bricks, TOTO toilet bike and the launch of 'Willow Glass'

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green TKTKTK

As we head towards the home stretch of the 2012 presidential campaign, we're closely watching both candidates to see what they're doing for the environment. The Obama administration scored a major win for fuel-efficient cars this week by finalizing new standards that will increase the fuel economy of cars to the equivalent of 54.5 mpg by 2025. But what about the cars that are currently on the road? This week we test drove a 2013 Ford Focus Electric through the streets of San Francisco (we admit, we did get a bit of range anxiety). And in one of the most interesting automotive stories from the past week, the world's first 3D-printed car -- the Areion EV-- reached a top speed of 141 kph.

Virtual Phone System: The Secret to a Successful Home Business ...

There are many things to consider when it comes to running a successful home business, but communication with clients and customers is one of the most important. A virtual phone system is a great way to ensure that home business owners are never out of reach, even when they are not at home.

Always Available

The great thing about using a virtual phone system is that it allows the business owner to always be available to their clients and customers. While it may be important to set regular business hours and stick to them, it may not be feasible for the business owner to stay near the home telephone waiting for calls to come through. The virtual phone allows users to forward calls to mobile devices or other locations with just a few clicks of the mouse, and this is important for people who are always on the go. This way, running a business and a household at the same time becomes much easier, and business owners are less stressed and more productive.

Better Organization

One of the difficulties associated with running a small business from home is staying organized in the wake of household schedules and business schedules. Juggling telephone calls from schools, clients, customers, doctors and more can certainly become a hassle, particularly if all of the calls are coming in to the same telephone number. With a virtual phone system, it is easier for business owners to set up secondary telephone numbers, and this helps calls remain better organized. The desktop application makes it easier to check voicemails and view the calls that came in to each individual telephone number.

Call Management

Running a small business from home can be extremely difficult during busy periods, particularly when there is only the business owner to handle the call volume. A virtual phone system provides plenty of features that help with call management; everything from an auto attendant to information hotlines can make communication easier in the long run. When a call cannot be answered right away, the virtual voicemail system will pick it up and provide the business owner with a notification. This voicemail can be checked via any telephone at all or even through the desktop interface. Calls can be easily prioritized, and those calls that require immediate responses can be handled.

Cost Effectiveness

There are many different options available for handling communications needs in a home-based business, but none are as cost-effective as a virtual phone system. A single landline is expensive enough, but when a second is added to suit the needs of the business, the cost can grow exponentially. Jacks must be installed, hardware must be purchased, and expensive monthly fees are imposed. Virtual telephones do not require the purchase of any additional equipment, and the monthly fees are much less than those associated with typical landline services.

All in all, enjoying a successful home-based business comes from combining excellent products or services with great customer service. The quality of customer service provided has much to do with the type of communications selected, and a virtual phone system is always a fantastic choice.

Voices from the right: Best quotes from the Republican convention

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - "I wish President (Barack) Obama had succeeded because I want America to succeed. But his promises gave way to disappointment and division. This isn't something we have to accept."

- Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney

"President Obama promised to slow the rise of the oceans and to heal the planet. My promise is to help you and your family."

- Mitt Romney

"What is needed in our country today is not complicated or profound. It doesn't take a special government commission to tell us what America needs. What America needs is jobs. Lots of jobs."

- Mitt Romney

"How many days have you woken up feeling that something really special was happening in America?

"Many of you felt that way on Election Day four years ago. 'Hope and Change' had a powerful appeal. But tonight I'd ask a simple question: If you felt that excitement when you voted for Barack Obama, shouldn't you feel that way now that he's President Obama? You know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had, was the day you voted for him."

- Mitt Romney

"College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms, staring up at fading Obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life. ... If you're feeling left out or passed by, you have not failed, your leaders have failed you."

- Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan

"We're a full generation apart, Governor Romney and I. And, in some ways, we're a little different. There are the songs on his iPod which I've heard on the campaign bus and on many hotel elevators. He actually urged me to play some of these songs at campaign rallies. I said, 'I hope it's not a deal-breaker Mitt, but my playlist starts with AC/DC and ends with Zeppelin.'"

- Paul Ryan

"The demographics race, we're losing badly. We're not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term."

- South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, on the dangers Republicans face if they cannot appeal to more minorities at a time when white voters are a decreasing part of the electorate.

"I read somewhere that Mitt and I have a 'storybook marriage.' Well, in the story books I read, there were never long, long, rainy winter afternoons in a house with five boys screaming at once. And those story books never seemed to have chapters called MS or breast cancer. A storybook marriage? No, not at all. What Mitt Romney and I have is a real marriage."

- Ann Romney

"I can't tell you what will happen over the next four years. But I can only stand here tonight, as a wife, a mother, a grandmother, an American, and make you this solemn commitment: This man will not fail. This man will not let us down. This man will lift up America."

- Ann Romney, on her husband

"I said tonight I wanted to talk to you about love."

-Ann Romney

"I believe we have become paralyzed by our desire to be loved. ... Tonight, we choose respect over love. We are not afraid. We are taking our country back."

- New Jersey Governor Chris Christie

"Before I ran for district attorney, two Republicans invited my husband and me to lunch. And I know a party switch was exactly what they wanted. So, I told Chuck, we'll be polite, enjoy a free lunch and then say goodbye. But we talked about issues. They never used the words Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal. We talked about many issues, like welfare - is it a way of life or a hand up? And when we left that lunch, we got in the car, and I looked over at Chuck and said, 'I'll be damned, we're Republicans.'"

-New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, a former Democrat

"Folks, let me tell you this, (Democratic Vice President) Joe Biden disputes a lot of those facts, but Joe Biden told me that he was a good golfer. And I've played golf with Joe Biden. I can tell you that's not true."

- Ohio Governor John Kasich

The Republican convention is a chance for Mitt Romney to prove that he is not "a plutocrat married to a known equestrian."

- Former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, on how Romney needs to show that he is not out of touch with the needs of the middle class

"We are not better off than we were four years ago, and no rhetoric, bumper sticker or campaign ad can change that. Mr. President, I am here to tell you we are not buying what you are selling in 2012."

- Mia Love, mayor of Sarasota Springs, Utah

"The true measure of a man is revealed in his actions during times of trouble, the quiet hospital room of a dying boy with no cameras or reporters."

- Ted Oparowski, recalling how Mitt Romney befriended their 14-year-old son in the seven months before he died of Hodgkin's disease in 1979.

Women's Health | Look Better By Tomorrow!

Last minute weekend plans? Here's how you can look hotter overnight.

FIRST STEP: Cut sugar, alcohol, sodium and refined carbs like white bread and pasta out of your diet and fibre intake to about 25g a day. All of this causes your body to retain water making you look and feel bloated.

SECOND STEP: Fill up on vegetables, protein and a little healthy fat the night before a big event or beach day. And limit starchy carbs. This combination revs up your metabolism and helps eliminate extra water weight. Try a meal of 113g of low-fat fresh fish (such as hake or dorado) drizzled with a flavourful low-fat spinach sauce. Serve with a side of steamed, non-starchy vegetables such as green beans.

THIRD STEP: Torch kilojoules and spike your metabolism with a fast-past strength circuit.

Try this: Do these moves with a two-kilojoule dumbbell. See the moves in sequence below with explanation.

1 Shuffle With Reach:
Begin in a squat position with your feet together, right arm extended behind you, left arm touching your right foot (A). Staying in a squat, lift your chest and bring your arms in front of you, elbows bent (B), then take five steps to the left. Bring your feet together, reaching your left hand behind you and your right hand down to your left foot (C). Reverse the movement to return to start. That?s one rep. Do four.

2 Squat To High Pull
Loop a resistance band around a low, sturdy object and grab one handle with both hands. Hold the band at waist height, arms extended straight in front of you, and back away until there?s no slack in the band. From that position, lower into a squat (A). As you stand, raise your arms overhead, keeping your arms straight and finishing with your elbows close to your ears (B). Lower back to the start position. That?s one rep. Do 15.

3 Single-Arm Chest Press With Rotation
Grab a dumbbell in your right hand and lie on your back on a stability ball, forming a straight line from your knees to your shoulders. Hold the dumbbell at chest height and rest your left hand on your hip (A). Straighten your right arm and press the dumbbell towards the ceiling and across your chest as you brace your abs and crunch up, lifting your shoulders off the ball (B). Return to start. That?s one rep. Do 10 to 12,?then repeat with your left arm.

4 Side Lunge To Shoulder Press
Stand with your feet hip-width apart and?hold a dumbbell in your left hand (A). Take a big step to the right and lower your body into a lunge, keeping your left leg straight (B). As you push off?your right leg to return to standing, curl the dumbbell towards your shoulder and press it above your head, finishing with your left arm straight and your elbow close to your ear (C). That?s one rep. Do eight to 12, then switch sides.

5 Reverse Lunge With Row
Loop a resistance band around a sturdy object at chest height and grab the handles with both hands, palms facing each other. Extend your arms straight in front of you and back away until there?s no slack. From that position, step back with your right foot and bend both knees to lower into a lunge (A). As you return to standing, quickly pull the handles towards your chest and squeeze your shoulder blades together (B). Return to?start. That?s one rep. Do 10, then repeat?with the left leg.

6 Step With Rear Leg Lift
Stand with your feet hip-width apart, shoulders back and arms at your sides. Step?forward with your left foot, bending your?left knee and shifting your weight onto your left foot (A). Straighten your knee and stand on your left leg, squeezing your glutes to lift your right leg as high behind you as you can without feeling it in your lower back, while bringing your arms straight overhead, elbows by your ears (B). That?s one rep. Do?15,?then switch legs and repeat.

7 Plank Sweep
Start in a push-up position, forming?a?straight line from shoulders to ankles. Bring your right?knee towards your left elbow (A). From that position, sweep your knee across your body to the outside of your right elbow (B). Return to start. That?s one rep. Repeat with the left knee and alternate until you?ve done eight to 10 reps on each side.

8 Kayaker
Grab a body bar or broomstick with?both hands and lie on your back on a stability ball. Extend your arms straight above you at chest height, brace your abs and crunch up to lift your shoulders off the ball. Hold this position for all the reps. Keeping your arms straight, pull the?left end of the bar to the left and allow your torso to rotate to the left (A). Bring the bar back across the middle and pull the right end to?the right, rotating your torso to the right (B). That?s one rep. Do 15.
